Show Round The World In Sports By Bill Roland The Super Bowl got all the attention this past week but other events of interest were happening in the world of sports. Jerry Pate, the reigning U.S. Open Champ kept his cool and won the Phoenix Open Sunday in a sudden death playoff over Dave Stockton. South African Jody Scheckter also stayed cool in the sweltering heat in Buenos Aires to win the Argentine Grand Prix after most of the Formula One cars dropped out. Chris Evert hit the dust in her 1977 debut. Martina Navratilova, the expatriate Czech, put the hurt on Chris to the tune of 6-2, 6-3 in 57 minutes to win the first of twelve Virginia Slims Tournaments. Tourna-ments. The Philadelphia Flyers are looking super in the National Hockey League, although, they took it on the chin Monday evening against the N.Y. Islanders. Island-ers. The Flyers have 25 wins, 9 losses and 9 ties while their arch-rival Montreal, Canadians sit atop the Wales Conference with 31 victories, 5 losses and 6 tics. In the NBA, Denver and Portland continue to be the hottest teams, although all the conferences have close races for the top spot. Last, but not least, the Kentucky Wildcasts are Number 2 in college Round Ball. Keep an eye on those Southern boys as they coast along in the Southeastern Southeas-tern Conference.
