Show Utah Slate Firms Up Land Plans Utah State University has firmed up plans to assist counties coun-ties with land use planning. The anouncement of a series of workshops is in conformity with Governor Calvin Rampton's State of the State address to the Utah Legislature in which he indicated in-dicated that Utah must watch critical areas of state land use, said Dr. Cyrus McKell, director of the Environment and Man Program at USU. Dr. McKell said Wednesday that preparations for land use planning workshops have been completed and definite dates have been set for a number of multi-county training sessions. "The purpose of these workshops work-shops is to train local leaders in identifying their planning problems and determining answers," ans-wers," Dr. McKell said. "The leaders in these workshops will acquaint elected officials, appointed ap-pointed boards, commissions and committees, local government govern-ment employees and interested citizens with sources of information in-formation and expertise for spotting the problems and developing dev-eloping needed basic information informa-tion for making decisions on present and future land use. "We are using a multi-county approach for the workshops, and at this time there are five workshops scheduled. The first will be February 9 at Cedar City for a five county area. Others are: Uintah Basin area at Bottle Bot-tle Hollow, February 14; Moun-tainlands Moun-tainlands area at Park City, February 21; a aix county area workshop at Richfield, March 2; and Southeastern Area at Moab, March 21." At this point, no workshop has been scheduled for the Wasatch Wa-satch Front area. The workshops will take the participants through a process of planning which will serve as a model for them to use subsequently sub-sequently in their own communities. com-munities. The Environment and Man Program and USU Extension are sponsoring the workshops along with the Department of Community Affairs, andtheSoil Conservation Servxe. Participants in the workshops will be introduced to the problems prob-lems of plannwg with a multimedia multi-media presentation. Then, using a workbook written by Andy Germanow and Donnie H. Grim-sley Grim-sley of the Environment and Man Program, each participant will provide local answers to general gen-eral questions on land use planning plan-ning posed by the handbook. Another booklet describing the Wasatch County Planning Process, will be provided the participant, and this information informa-tion will be supplemented by a multi-media presentation on the land use planning process in Wasatch County. Group discussions discus-sions will follow the instruction period. Cooperating organizations include the Wasatch County Commission, the Utah State Planning Coordinator's Office, the Utah Association of County Commissfoners, and the Utah League of Ci'ties and Towns. Direct costs of the workshop work-shop program have been borne by the Rockefeller-funded En-v'ronment En-v'ronment and Man Program and the Intergovernmental Personnel Per-sonnel Service Center. |
