Show A WONDERFUL SUGGESTION Another Pioneer Day has come and gone and we are again reminded of the tremendous sacrifice a and d hardy courage demonstrated by those who transformed the desert into a paradise It is particularly apropos just now to consider a suggestion from Carlton Culmsee Culms e Dean of Utah State University and one of the grandest gentlemen we know As we get deeper into our second century writes the Dean we should keep contact with our usable past I am amnot amnot amnot not suggesting mere hero worship of leaders in history but buta a concerted movement to keep refreshed and strong what was good in the past and appl applying ing it if possible to the present day problems There is a surprising interest in this sort of thing he continues and not just among the Sons of the Pioneers he the Daughters of the American Revolution and such or or- We have 46 persons in a class in folklore here at the University and each is completing a project of gathering diaries or or myths and legends They are gathering some mighty fascinating stuff stuff material material that could be lost forever in a few years of neglect Dean Culm Culmsee ee suggests that various local organizations and individuals interested in such things might focus their combined interest on a project to preserve local history f folklore old letters of narrative or descriptive merit objects of pioneer handicrafts and artistry It is of course quite 1 likely that some are doing such things though not in a unified way Every once in a while the Dean concludes some same sociologist comes from afar to see how haw the pioneers achieved what they did in in cooperative efforts The lore of that first century has a lot of meaning when we try to set get at the spirit that moved mountains in the early days Certainly we agree with the good Dean that there is much to be done in this project project not project project-noty not only in the state as a whole but in this community especially |
