Petersen president president I dent of ot the Utah Heart Association an announced announced an- an anI I flounced today The local organization i I Is affiliated with the American Heart Association An appeal for tor funds will be made during the month to help reach the goal of ot hoped for tor In Utah In Inthis Inthis Inthis this area a total of ot was given to the Heart Fund last year with Mrs Peterson serving as chairman of ot the drive and it Is hoped the donations to the 1956 1950 Heart Fund will exceed this amount The diseases of ot the heart and circulatory circulatory tory system account for tor more deaths each year In the United States than all other causes combined Dr Petersen pointed out Because the Utah Heart Association is pledged to conquer this problem the Heart Fund Campaign unquestionably up- up questionably merits the support of ot every thinking citizen It Is now an established 1 fact tact that some of ot the heart diseases can be prevented prevented prevented pre pre- vented a II few can be cured and almost all cases can be helped by proper treat treat- treatment ment ment especially especially after early diagnosis I he continued This Is the result of ot research re- re search search research research of ot the character that thatIs Is supported by the Heart Fund There are three main areas of ot re research research re re- search in which our Investigators are working working rheumatic rheumatic fever hardening of the arteries an and 1 high blood pressure These take top priority inasmuch as they are responsible for tor more than 90 per cent of ot all heart disease i I Ii Thanks to scientific research rheu rheumatic matic fever often the forerunner of ot otI rheumatic heart disease now may be classed as a preventable disease Dr Petersen Peterson pointed out We have but to apply presently existing knowledge In order to make it a rare disease We have every reason to feel confident con ident and hopeful that other significant significant cant victories are in the offing he be said We know that no medical problem problem pro pro- blem is necessarily beyond solution If It I we give medical science the support it requires and deserves it is 18 well within Ithe j I the realm aim of ot possibility that many If If not all of the major unknowns associated associated with all three major causes of heart disease will be solved within the foreseeable foreseeable fore tore seeable future Seventy five per cent of ot all contributions contributions to the heart Fund made in Utah are retained for tor the local program of ot community service education and re reo re- search The balance of ot these funds lunds are used to support the nationwide research and education programs of ot the American Heart Association However Dr Peterson Petersen pointed out Utah has haa a unique position because of ot the great amount of heart research re research reo re- search being conducted In the state Following the 1955 1055 Heart Fund approximately was forwarded to the American Heart Association but I Iwas was returned to the state tate In the form of ot American Heart Association research grants to local scientists i |
