Show r ty I f 5 t 1 t Park City's H 4 Pebble Pups Report on Wonderful Past Year We have just finished another year In 4 H 4 H and It has been beem most exciting One of the highlights highlights highlights high high- lights was a visit from Mr Gus of Altadena Calif Calif- ornia He brought us some nice samples of and Halite crystals from Searle Lake in California Mr we learned is the president of the California Federation of Mineralogical Mineralogical Mineralogical Min- Min Society and also Vice president of the National Fed Fed- We also received some beautiful beautiful beautiful beau beau- specimens from the Dr Drake fa family mil y of Anchorage Alaska and a paper called Pebble Patter Patter- put out by the Alaskan askan rock hounds The paper had a listing of all the summer summerfield field trips and invited us to i. i join them There were many trips listed into the back country country coun coup try that sounded very intriguing Wish we could have joined them Our cl club b was in charge of the nature program at H 4 Camp and of course we chose rocks and a treasure hunt Each member was asked to find and define what they had found If q j t they didn't know our club helpt help help- t ed them Even though we were rained out in the afternoon the morning was a lot of fun i DISCOVERY On one of our exploration trips we came upon a group of miners tearing down some old buildings Nearby there was a pile of smooth strange looking rocks We asked the men and this is the story they told us These roc rocks k s were shipped here from Norway and used in inthe inthe inthe the rock mill to crush the ore They were used as late as the early One of the fellows said these were original flint- flint stones or oras was as some say Norwegian Norwegian Norwegian Nor Nor- Pebbles These rocks became very smooth through use and were worn into various shapes They t t- t varied in color from jet black to a light tan and were speckled and plain and some had interesting interesting interesting inter inter- esting lines and swirls in them We gathered a wheel barrow full and brought them home to our leader Now what could we- we wedo do with them these them these odd shaped odd colored very smooth stones This was the question FUN PROJECT We had an artist friend who paints on roc rocks s and old wood so we decided to see what we could do as a fun project projects We painted funny faces scenes and lettering to make them inter inter- esting It was a lot of fun and really surprising to see how artistic the group was Some have been sold One is on the coach's desk used as a paper weight Our leader plans to build a replica of an old well for her garden with the rest of the rocks We were all interviewed for forthe forthe forthe the Lynn Adair Farm Show and it was fun to hear our voices on the radio We talked about our Tot Tenders Club and how it has been a profitable experience for all especially since we are on the hotel register register register reg reg- ister and are called to sit for convention groups who bring their children with them and need sitters attending meetings We also told about our rock pI project j d d what we have learn learn- the ed-the friends we have made and of our ur exchange program J j with clubs in other states f o of I BLUE RIBBONS Our club club members took blue ribbons at the County Fair on our ro rock k d displays splays June Kummer Kummer Kummer Kum- Kum mer won a sweepstake ribbon on her rock jewelry and the display display display dis dis- dis- dis play was sent to the State Fair where she also won a blue ribbon June is one of our youngest youngest youngest young young- est members and has been in inthe inthe inthe the club three years June also had an opportunity to explore the Arizona desert and brought back some fine specimens Ken is our youngest member and he chose shells as his project Some of his friends brought him some from the coast and he spent long hours looking them up in the encyclopedia encyclopedia encyclopedia ency ency- so he could know each one and where it came from All in all it has been an interesting year We have learned a lot and made many new friends all of which makes for a very interesting project |
