Show I Meat Imports j Denounced by Farm Union I IKAMAS KAMAS KAMAS- A ASAt AS- AS At a recent Utah farmers UnIon UnIon Un Un- I Ion board of directors meeting a aI I resolution denouncing the large I I Red Meat Imports from Australia Austra lia ha and New Zeland was unanimously approved Mr Douglas Simpson president of Utah Farmers Union and mem memo ber bet of the Presidents President's National Agricultural Advisory Commission Commis Commis- Commission sion slon reported lo to the board on the Import in Increases re over the last Jast two years Dressed lamb imports mostly from New Zealand and Australia during the first six months of 1963 1063 totaled pounds compared compared com pared to during the same period in 1962 an on increase of 95 per cent Mr Simpson reported reported- Mutton Imports during the first six months month'S totaled pounds compared to pounds in the same period of 1962 an Increase of 18 per cent The import mutton Is probably more mutton than we produce in inthe inthe inthe the United States and also this I poundage Is 11 per cent of our domestic production of lamb and mutton for the first six months of this year Since this Import poundage is on a product weight basis instead of carcass weight basis the volume is really considerably con con- I larger than 11 per cent I of our production Most of the mutton comes In here in boneless j I form and comes from Australia I Mr Simpson said I j I Red meat imports into this country have been Increasing in staggering percentages and sell sell- I ing at a much lower price than American produced meats Accord ling l 1 ing to a report received this morn ing a million pounds of beef per I week Is coming in through the Port of Tampa Fla Fla- alone Mr Simpson reported The resolution adopted by the Utah Farmers Union board reads Resolve Whereas cattle are depressed and cattle are selling far below thEY the same period in 1962 Whereas the percentage of red meat imports have Increased from six per cent to ten and one half per cent in the past two years and I Whereas a continuation of the increases will further depress the I price paid to the farmer we th the I 1 State Board Doard of ot the Utah Farmers I I Union recommend reduction In j i imports of all kinds of red meat |
