The Vikings didn't give the Braves a chance to get it Vikings Upend Braves By JIM AYLOR f I For the first time In Viewmont Viewmont Viewmont View View- mont and Bountiful history the Vikings h have a v e defeated t the h e i mighty Braves DURING THE past four years there has developed a very strong and spirited rivalry between be between between be- be tween the two high schools After the sad defeat of the thelast thelast thelast I last game with South on South's I Ifield field in that game Viewmont just couldn't play ball the first half just nothing could go right By the end of the first half it was South's favor 20 There in the team room during the half time entertainment the ball club was put under such severe pep talk and bawling out Ci mostly the latter t oy ny y the coaches coach- coach es the likes Ive I've never seen before in my past two years at Viewmont AT THE VERY beginning of the second half through a very lucky break the Cubs scored again The the fired up Vikings came back strong and tallied up three touchdowns in a littleover little littleover I over 15 minutes for 19 big points and had the ball and I were a big threat of scoring again when ti time me ran out I The final score 26 19 what started out as what looked like a shut out turned out to be bea a one touchdown and a few minutes difference But it was t still a failure and a big dis dis- appointment SO THEN came a very tough week of practice which included ed hard work on the boards These are some things that have been added since we de defeated defeated defeated de- de big West on our field fieldi i 10 The boards are s smooth mo 0 t h wooden plans about a foot wide and six long There are two v lineman paired up one at each end facing one another I ing the board then the two crash into each other 0 One n e trying to knock the other off his feet The board is sort of like playing ng k-ng of bunker hill Only this Is serious business Its purpose is to teach the lineman lineman lineman line line- man to keep his balance by keeping his feet wide apart and to stay low THE LINE coach helps out by cracking anyone who raises up too high on the helmet with witha a baseball bat There is a little danger involved sin since c e the boards are smooth your wont won't dig in and if you step stepon on the the plank plank you'll fall flat fiat on e. e For For example example e one of our first string tackles required s six I x in his chin the first day AS THE BALL tea team m was working hard so was the pep club student body officers and booster club as usual There were acU activities in the halls and cafeteria during lunch to build spirit There was a hall of fame with the names of all the players on the walls Signs banners and posters handing all over the place The student- student body spirit was doubling every every- day Before we Wt realized it Friday Friday Friday Fri Fri- day was here As the student body filled the gym for the big pep rally the players met I down in the team room to talk over plays and discuss strategy I II I THE TWO captains Lee Ses Sessions and Jim Hatch came inand in inI inand I and Lee Let read us a letter he received from the Bountiful High Red Guard their booster club In brief it said that the superior school up on the l hill ll was planning on wiping out the inferior school with the junior high school spirit down in the cellar I If our first string varsity I isn't good enough to even warm the bench over at Bountiful i dares show up for the game I Well needless to say this didn't exactly improve feelings toward the Braves WHEN WIlEN THE GAME started Viewmont received the opening kick off with Dave Nelson receiving re receiving re- re I cei ving and starting to return right then passed across the field to Alan Cleverly who ran 80 yards for a touchdown touch touchdown down behind a wall of fired up Vikings blockers The poi point n t tI i after was good r W going wl while le the Vikings scored on long razzle-dazzle razzle passes Final score 40 After a Viewmont fumble re recover recovery recovery re- re cover covery Hayes the quarterback l hit t Kevin for a GO 60 yard tally Then the Braves came back strong scoring on a 70 yard drive which made the score 14 THE BRAVES again had the ball in the second quarter I when Jim Aylor intercepted a Rick Simmons pass and went for a 25 yard touchdown The point after was good and the half ended Viewmont 21 Bountiful 7 The Viking were not satisfied satisfied satisfied satis satis- fied and in the third quarter Nelson Hayes found Jim Hatch wi with th a 40 yard touchdown pass run Then came right back afterLee after Lee Sessions recovered ble and and Hayes hit Dave Nelson I with a 55 yard touchdown pay- pay dirt pass THE BRAVES weren't down yet when they gained another six and the point after on a Viking fumble in their own end I zone In the last of the fourth quarter Allen Cleverly again ran for a 50 yard touchdown but was called back on a five yard penalty But after the ball had changed hands a couple of times the reserve quarterback Sammy Buchanin fired a long 40 yard touchdown pass to fleet footed Gary Egnew from the first play from scrimmage The e extra ira point was good and the final score inferior View View- mont 40 superior Bountiful 14 I So for the first time in four years years the Vikings have the city championship |
