Show The Budget President Lyndon J Johnson 0 h n son has asked Congress to approve budgets that will run eight and nine billion dollars in the red for this and the next fiscal year That would add 17 billion dollars to the national debt CONSIDERING the somber fact that the national debt is isnow isnow isnow now well over billions and that this year it is costing the people of the United States 14 billion billion bUlion dollars to pay the interest interest interest inter inter- est on it alone there is good reason to think twice before stepping up the total by 17 bil billions billions billions bil- bil lions in the next two years Granted the war in Vietnam cannot be abandoned regardless regardless regardless regard regard- less of how one feels about the wisdom of our course in that Asian land and that it is costly the issue boils down to the question question question ques ques- tion whether spending on do domestic domestic domestic do- do programs and foreign aid will be reduced or whether high spending will continue both for military and Great Society programs IN THE END it is the re responsibility responsibility responsibility re- re of Congress to as assert assert assert as- as sert itself on the question of fi financial financial fi- fi responsibility and the Congress certainly has a mandate to do so |
