how ho ea cani easily iI it is to tOl tots toss 8 someone aside I By JIM AYLOR In the past week Utah has had the privilege of hosting the fifth World Judo Championships which ran Wednesday Aug 9 through Saturday Aug 12 The tournament was held in the University University University Uni Uni- of Utah field house AND IF you attended any of the matches you were probably as bewildered as I was to see seewhy seewhy seewhy why anyone would dare host a world championship in the university university university uni uni- uni- uni fieldhouse that looked more like a big barn than anythIng anything anything any any- thing else which was dedicated d In 1939 The facilities were on the poor side little training space bad press facilities poor seating and what I think was the worst of all was the tion It was extremely uncomfortable uncomfortable uncomfortable for the spectators even evenIn evenin evenin In the evening As you were sweating profusely profusely profusely pro pro- you could imagine what the athletes on the mats were going through wearing their very heavy and thick Judo Gis even during the hottest part of the day It was beyond me to figure out why It wasn't held In Ina a much better suited high school or the Deseret Gym BUT Bur IT IS A little more understandable un understandable understandable un- un after being told that if it cost the sPonsors sponsors of the meet to put the show on the road and the only way to break even was to have a large seating capacity and the field- field house was the only answer with seats And you will be happy to know that the sponsors broke even and even made a little profit Although there was rather poor attendance every night on the part of the good citizens of Utah there ther might have been some harm done to the Olympics for Utah Just what are the athletes and officials going to say about the great reception they received after alter they return to their homelands I dont don't think they're going to be blabbering blabbering blabbering blab blab- bering with praise JUDO IS one of the fastest growing sports in the United States today The US U.S. Judo Federation lists at the end of 1966 and Maxwell chairman of the Central California California Cali Cali- fornia Board of Examiners THE ST START ART of judo contests is begun by the referee with the Japanese word Hajime The two opponents stand facing each other about ten feet apart There are three officials presiding over each match The two Ju Ju- Ju dokas bout until one throws the theother theother theother other largely on his back quite forcibly inside the boundaries on the mat He is then awarded one point called an A AI I I is an almost I I and a sogo is a compound win Two score an I and as mentioned before an wins the match But believe me it gets much more complicated than that If you cant can't throw your opponent you can put submission holds on him and win points or else you youcan youcan can choke him Into submission The point Is awarded by the word shame shime The end of the contest is called sore sore made BUT AS IT STANDS after alter the championships and all the in inventors inventors inventors in- in of the sport
