P HICKIN 1 1 ut Vermont says saya V V as a child chUd he was sickly Hero Here Is II I a resume of some of the trials that beset him During his third year rear In school chool he had mumps measles and whooping hooping cough co This left him In a further weakened condition resulting In a a terrible speech Impediment a combination of stammer and stutter At the tho age aie of twelve ho he developed a goiter and an attempt was mad to remove remove the growth by br X X rare ray However knowledge of the X ray was limited and a sever severe burn resulted which Involved medical care caro for years rears He lie finished grade school In eight years rears but he would not attend high school Humiliation over his hi speech Impediment brought on a nervous breakdown at st sixteen that resulted In his being completely shut shut- In for three months At eighteen he be had another breakdown brought on by the embarrassment of the speech Impediment Finally J he ho obtained a diagnosis of his ment the gist of it being that the trouble was mental and that for a sum of money beyond their means mAans ho he could be cured Grasping at this thought he b. bought books on applied and practical psychology He lie studied long hours and attempted to devise a system of speech correction using the trial and error method After Alter eight years and many set backs he made progress that convinced him ho could effect a cure He lie obtained a position driving a bus so that he would be forced to talk to the public Despite his handicap he be built a desire to operate a school and help others to have normal speech So So he ho left the employ of the bus company and accepted a position of manager of an Air Show stunt flyers In this position he had to book shows and act as 81 publicity agent and announcer and he had to talk before before be be- fore groups of from five hundred bundred to fifteen thousand people In hi two years rears Studying day and night he obtained a certificate as an Instructor In Navigation and Meteorology and during the war he ha was employed by the tho Civil Aeronautics Administration as an Aircraft Communicator Following Follow Follow- Following ing the war he h. taught for several years on the G.
