Show More Early History About Park City Editor Park Record You Record You remember remember ber I claimed to be the oldest continUOus continuous con con- resident of ct Summit County County- years Friends have asked naked me to tell The Record readers some more Incidents of ot early days I will tell you what I know of a tragedy that occurred In Park City two forty years ago At Wanship where I 1 then lived Jived the Utah Eastern train always an announced nn- nn nn-i nn its fis coming with a long I screeching whistle and passed assed thru I our with a loud clanging bell One beautiful moonlight night In August 1880 the 1880 the engine and caboose glided elided through the with scarcely a sound BOund It looked like it may have been a II Phantom Train I 1 may have thought I dreamed of at teeing seeing it but It soon BOOn returned still ss as as possible on its way back to Park Parle City The next morning the people of ot Park City beheld a II gruesome sight sights sight sight- a s man hanging by his neck to a telegraph telegraph telegraph tele tele- graph pole In the lower tower end of ot town I 1 do not know anything about tho the affair but as told to me at the time Two men mell Murphy and Brennan Drennan had hada a disagreement Murphy with the avowed intention of ot killing Drennan Brennan succeeded after atter several attempts in borrowing a gun when he approached approach approach- ed Brennan's Drennan's cabin Drennan Brennan shot him dead Brennan Drennan was arrested and taken to Coalville the next day It was then thena a vigilante party was formed the Utah Eastern train and crew captured ed a quiet run made to the prisoner forcibly taken from tram jail hence the Phantom Phanton Train I think a vigilante party under the excitement of at a crime being committed commit commit- ted are much more apt to do a greater crime than would a a. judge end and jury after atter carefully considering all the evidence The vigilante idea should be severely condemned at all times WM Wl REYNOLDS P.
