I I the metal In In- Industry was faced with a situation that threatened to close most of tile the mines and smelters Most of or oftie tie the easily smelted oxidized ores had been mined and much of or the future supply of or metals it became apparent ap ap- apparent parent would of or necessity have to come from low grade sulphide lead- lead zinc ores with higher cost reduction This presented a challenge to the smelting industry International Smelting and rent Refit mg n company met the challenge with metallurgical cal improvements that breathed new life lire into the mining industry not only of or Utah but he Ie entire West Casting aside thoughts of dis dis- dismantling dismantling dis- dis dismantling mantling the Tooele plants which were w re then closed down officials de de- decided decided tided to make a n comprehensive survey surveyor of the situation It was evi evI- evident evIdent evident dent that a new supply of or ore would have to be developed ed and that metallurgy would have to be bo ad ad- advanced advanced to a n point where It would be possible to properly dress ore before it could be smelted This it was found called for the saving of or the zinc in lead lead- zinc sulphide ores which Hereto nereto Heretofore heretofore fore ore had been subjected to a penalty when this crude product of or the mines was shipped direct to smelters At the conclusion conclusion of oC the survey In 1922 tine the International Company decided to stay in Utah and launched a twofold program which required the expenditure of oC mil mil- millions millions lions of oC dollars The program em cm- embraced braced the entrance of oC the smelting company into actual prospecting and mining to obtain adequate ton ton- tonnage tonnage nage to continuously operate the smelter and to conduct exhaustive metallurgical research This is the second of oC a series serJe of oC eight articles The third will appear in these columns soon |
