Show Majority or Minority By ByRUTH ByRUTH B RUTH TAYLOR I wish It were possible to eradicate those two words from the English language language but but unfortunately If one could do this other words wordy would be thought up to express the same idea Thero should be no place for tor such discriminatory words In a democracy And mind you they are discriminatory and of themselves ore are Creating bad feel feel- feelIng Ing tag and prejudice Majorities feel that their very num num- numbers numbers bers entitle them to supreme power that their Interests as a group must come como first Minorities too often place the privilege of their group before the rights of or all citizens In both cases far too frequently those rise to the top to positions of or power who seek seck personal aggrandizement and who by their ac ac- ac actions actions hurt the group which they claim I to represent Tho The majority looks upon the minority I as not quite as they are are na as something different from the tho herd herd and and they dont don't like that Minorities for their part too often have a chip on their shoulder When banded together for tor self pro they become a powerful pres pros wore sure force torce which Is Irritating to the tho ma ma- And much too frequently both sides forget torget that they are Americans governed by the same laws and subject to tho the same SnIDe responsibility The labor bloc the public utility bloc blad the tho farm bloc etc when they put their own individual ambitions to the front and forget the tho nations' nations needs n arc are un- un American ference This Is equally true whether tho dif dif- be of political party class religion re re- re religion ligion or color what Is ig 1 more In each of those groups there are minorities and majorities Sumner Welles called the term racial or religious Minority accursed And he be was right though ho could have added class to the list It Is the whole Idea of or segregation and separation of or people Into groups treating them generally not In In- In Individually individually that we have been and are fighting In the tho brave new world for tor l we hope let us guard against group thinking Let us remember that ul ad wo we are all citizens of a nation citizens of or a II world of or United Nations Let us majority us-majority majority and minority minority- together as ns Individuals regardless of tit CIe j M us w u Let group from which we come our personal responsibilities f fulfill them before we start about Let us prove e As Asare our rights l' l are forgetting whether we be beor or majority Just let us only lit tr Amt cans all f |
