O Elks No wish to thank all those who contributed In any any- anyway way wa in making the occasion the success success- successful ful fui event It was vas The following tribute to Old Glory I was taken from the Kearns paper and andI I will prove interesting Old Glory since that day years ago when her stars and stripes were first unfurled to the free breeze of a freeland free land has served as the beloved and honored symbol of a freedom lovIng people Today moro more than at any time In our nations nation's history our Flag represents to all Americans and citizens of many other nations as well the land of the free and home or of the bravo brave Never in the history ot of the United States of America had the future looked more bla black than during the months following fol- fol following lowing the staggering blow of December 7 7 1941 when the nation long rights of life liberty and pursuit ot of happiness of every American were menaced by the domineering forces of brute strength and tyranny which are attempting to conquer all tree free lands Wo We Americans may well be proud of Old Glory which observes its birthday on Flag Day June 14 It is easily the most beautiful of all national colors It has pointed the way to free free- freedom freedom dom for tor countless thousands It stands for national unity patriotism loyalty and fidelity to the ideals of the United States of AmerIca During the past 18 months the Stars and Stripes have been carried to all parts of the world by our fighting men who are endeavoring to preserve the tho American standards of decent living Americans for tor years have looked up to it as the rallying point of patriotism and as s a symbol of our national unity Except for an occasional change inthe In Inthe the number of stars and stripes authorized auth- auth authorized by congress from time to time Old Glory is much the same as It was when it was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14 1777 Floating from the lofty pinnacle of American idealism our Flag Is an em- em emblem emblem blem of endurIng hope It gives us as- as assurance of Justice and liberty to those who are arc Americans by birth and by adoption It Js is the revered banner ot of an assemblage of free people It has been the custom of Americans I in recent years to observe June 14 as I Flag Day On this birth date of our Flag let us repeat our pledge to Old Glory I pledge allegiance to- to the Flag ot of the United States of America and to the Republic for which It stands one Nation indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all |
