A Pike the veteran mining hoisting engineer of this city completed his fiftieth year of service last Saturday For more than 40 years of his record I period Mr Pike has been a holstman atthe at atthe atthe the Daly West shaft of the Park Utah Consolidated mine Mr Pike estimates that during his I long career at the throttle of the mines mine's huge hoisting machines he has handled 1 more than carloads of ore cage loads of miners and has worked shifts shUts Only two accidents have occurred while whilo he was In charge of the machinery Engine and cable trouble in his hoist hoist- room caused steam st am pipes to explode in 1905 and and he was in a hospital with i tor several months Later a a. miner fainted In a hoist car while Mr Pike was In charge of the machinery The miner was crushed crushed- to death between the cage and the shaft walls Now nearly 74 years of age Mr Pike still takes his station dally daily and de de- de declares declares clares he feels good enough to work for several years A native of New York state the veter veter- veteran an engineer operated a n. steam hoist in a n. Gouverneur New York mine for several years ears before coming to Park City in 1891 At Park City he found employment first with the Anchor Mining company In the old Anchor mine The Th shaft later larer became a part of tho the Park Utah property and he continued In his post with the I company until he was transferred to the Daly West shaft in 1899 JI I |
