ASH AND OS ON WE AVE GO GOSO GO- GO GOso GOSO SO rUt FAIl QUITE S ILC I New York Sunday Sundays Sept 12 1937 I SINCE MY first letter we have seen 0 very cry little of real Interest further than knocking around as It were simply killing time which comes rather easy when wh n traveling and trying to see all you can of the country you pass thru and the many things to be seen and wondered at when In big lg cities clUes t tIT I I IT WAS Monday evening September when we arrived at Omaha after alter a pleasant ride on a crowded train trainS and greater ter crowds at the big union station at Omaha Omaha many many hundreds coming and going amid considerable excitement of ot changing trains making reservations and hurrying and scurrying In every tion Travel this year we are told Is heavier than for many years past past past- Roose Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt which Is very good evidence of velt prosperity and the gradual work- work workIng working workIng Ing out of his new deal program Let Letus Letus Letus us hope that even greater prosperity Is ahead for the nation na In n general I AT OMAHA the first familiar face seen en since leaving home was that of or ofEd ofEd orEd Ed Firmage who had arrived at the station but a few minutes before tho the second section of the long Challenger train pulled In We had planned to have dinner at Omaha between trains but trains but we only had time for a up hurry sand sand- sandwich sandwich sandwich and then hasten for our respective trains Mr Firmage to catch the one for lor St. St Louis on his purchasing trip and The Record man to wiggle his way back through a labyrinth of surging crowds and tunnels to get back to his train for Chicago A person has to keep his wits about him on such but occasions occasions but de despite de- de despite spite old age we managed to get there and enjoy the thrill of necessary action actton TUESDAY MORNING at daylight after a sound hours eight-hours sleep the blind of the lower berth was up allow allow- allowing allowIng ing tag me rae a view of the country being traversed Western Illinois Is a pretty section of our great nation and the panorama of changing scenes Is 18 mighty Interesting to one who enjoys traveling At ClIpton we crossed croe ed the Mighty Mis Mis- Mississippi Mississippi MIssissippi river riv river end r and that big stream Is always good to look at I AT 9 a. a m. m Tuesday we landed at nt Chicago Chicago and and were soon registered atthe at atthe the Palmer House one House one of the big hotels of this big city and city and one of the earliest hotels It was always a leader for mag- mag In the hotel line line but but great and extensive arc are the changes and ad advancement ad- ad advancement since 1876 our 1876 our first visit to Chicago It would fill fUl a book and a avery avery avery very capable writer to describe the de details de- de detailS tails the service and magnificence of the scores Cores of great hotels In this great city of the midwest mid west OUR FOUR days das In Chicago were spent seeing Insight In and rambling around after dark marveling at the al almost al- al almost almost most endless varied and magnificent electric displays Many of them are arc simply marvelous In their dazzling rubber and beauty Simply rubber ing believe me It requires a neck of very considerable to bend upwards and at various angles to see the sky- sky skyhigh skyhigh high buildings and other things good to look at DURING TIlE THE day our time was spent on buses passenger buses street cars both single and double deckers deck deck- decken en ers elevated railways and ordinary au au- automobiles au- au taking In many parts part of the great city city seeing the great buildings the beautiful parks several everal beauty spots of Lake Michigan resort the stock yards etc etc etc and then with It all only seeing a n. very very small part of the second largest city of the great U. U S. S A. A ONE OF OP the places stopped at on our several eral outings which proved of more than pasting passing Interest Inte st was the Elks National Memorial building It Is certainly certainly a n. marvel of beauty with Its re renowned re- re renowned paintings Its unique Interior and Its grandeur of construction tion THURSDAY WE This morning opened with a surprise and an anticipated ed pleasure Mr and Mrs Firmage and daughter Miss Mias Louise arrived at the hotel the hotel the former coming from St St. Louis and the two ladles from Laurel MIMis- MIMis sippi The surprise was on the ladles when seeing Dad lounging comfortably comfort comfort- comfortably comfortably ably In the lobby they lobby they having no Idea he be was on another Jaunt jaunt and and the plea plen- pleasure pleasure sure aure was In the reunion of at least part of the family The day was spent In more sight seeing and the early night was spent In window shopping etc FRIDAY WAS Just one of those rambling ramblIng ing days when days when one oue Is kept very cry busy doing nothing and getting nowhere yet very ery satisfying and pleasing when one li is vacationing with no cares or worries not not even en a pain In the neck ALMOST A week w k now since we tossed tOMed over the trials and tribulations of getting get get- getting getting ting out a country weekly to the more vigorous and more capable junior part part- partner ner and ner-and and while we have seen n nothing of the life high or low wickedness of this great city city we we have seen much of In Interest In- In terest and good cheer which Is more to our liking i I AND NOW are leaving for New York No we are not going by train train we we have had aplenty of train for the present pre and for the next few thousands thousand of miles we e will travel by our favorite mode modI of transportation the the modern modem bus We will leave at 9 0 o'clock and will be In New NewYork NewYork I York a little after noon Sunday Sunday pro pro providing viding of or course e we have no tip overs or collisions I THE Fill will remain a day or two longer In Chicago before proceeding to New York to meet their son on his return from his L L. S S. S Washing Washing- Washington ton for New York and home We were on deck at 6 a n. n m m. the tM following fol- fol lowing morning to find the ship plowing Its Us way up the Hook of Holland A slight disappointment now for we had expected to see miniature farms and numerous i windmills dotting the landscape Instead we passed busy dock yards and immense 1 I modern factories Nowhere could there i be seen wooden shoes baggy trousers etc ft those etc etc etc- those pictures we had bad stored away awny since our early url grades Rotterdam Rott held nothing of special s In- In tere t except the fact that the Pilgrim Fathers hailed haUe-d from here but the spot pot is 1 a considerable distance from the city city- also the building Is under repairs so ao sow I w did cUd not take time to visit it After a a. short visit with President and Sister Murdoch and missionaries of the Nether I lands mission we moved on to the the Hague There we wo visited the Dutch Par Par-j Par Par- buildings Old Port where once once I were imprisoned and tortured the early Christian reformers Queens Qu ns Palace here we had a n guide show us through the en entire en- en entire entire tire structure and a visit to the world I famed Palace of Peace From the Hague I we Journeyed to Amsterdam arriving there the evening e of the same day da I 1 In Amsterdam we spent n a pleasant two days In and about the city The first morning we took a a. tour of Markin I and Volendam Volendam-ohl Volendam oh no bitter disappointments now for here heije he in reality we we t discovered old Holland Windmills farms I wooden shoes and all all little girls dressed exactly as their mamas and little boys Just like their papas As we passed each cottage we could tell Just how many of the family were at home by counting the number of wooden shoes on the doorstep I i We spent the afternoon of this same day at the great Boy Scout Worlds World's Jam- Jam boree We spent a n most interesting time time I visiting the displays from each country Supper was enjoyed particularly as we were special guests of the Utah Contin- Contin Contingent I gent headed by two Provo boys Jay Nel Nel- Nelson Nelson son and Merrill The Utah company by the way has an en- en enviable enviable enviable viable record of being one of the best Inthe In Inthe the entire United States group Back In Amsterdam the next day we paid a visit to a great diamond factory and Inthe In Inthe Inthe the afternoon visited Museum where hangs many of Rembrandt's paint paint- paintings paintIngs paintings ings most famous of those viewed was The Night Watch Leaving Amsterdam In the tho evening and traveling to War- War I Germany we took a steamer across the Baltic Sea to Gedser where we again took a n train direct to Copen Copen- hagen Nothing of special Interest in J Copen-J Copen- Copen Copenhagen I hagen and yet et it is the city that we we I have been most taken with so 50 far From Copenhagen wo we w o again took ship to Malmo Sweden where an express train rushed us on to Stockholm i Stockholm is one of or the most beautiful cities we have ever been In It is built I so they say on a thousand Islands In In sight seeing one takes as many ferrys as 1 busses We Wo visited Skansen where still remains bits of or ancient Sweden The Swedes were a hearty lot they really had to be to live in this once rough I 1 land of the midnight sun A night at the opera was also enjoyed e joyed In Sweden Sweden well well hardly enjoyed the enjoyed the opera was Madame Butterf the Butterfly Iv music was was was' much to dreamy for tor two weary I first act rather act rather enjoyable second act act act- slept through the whole thing third act two empty seats in the gallery I IThe The train Journey from Stockholm back down to Malmo MaiOlO was very impressive Itis It Itis is country not unlike our own I lake region Rough pine clad mountains I thousands of sparkling lakes we could really see s fish Jumping and numerous I lumber camps From Sweden we crossed the Baltic Sea to Germany then on to Berlin I Berlin Is a marvelous city but the thereal thereal real Joy is s taken from being here by the feeling of war that is seemingly In the air Perhaps this feeling is caused by bythe bythe the fact that so very ery many uniforms are in evidence or maybe Its Us the many mill mill- I tary demonstrations Again It may be bo that we want to feel teel this was to add color to our trip You see we had been I warned so much about how careful we would have to be In Germany that It would really be disappointing If we we found conditions normal A sight seeing tour of the city proved very interesting and we visited among others the following follow- follow followIng followIng Ing places of interest interest- The famous Brandenburg Brand- Brand I. I enburg Gate the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier the Pleasure Garden and Cathe Cathe- drat the National S orts ts Field the 1936 Olympic Grounds the Ministry of Pro Pro- I and the largest ministry In the I world the Air Ministry From Germany we took a train to Prague Czechoslovakia and our course lay along the River Elbe We also had a four hour stopover in Dresden where we visited the art gallery and museum the tour of the art gallery was made especially Interesting because here hangs Rafaelo's famous In Prague we had a great time the city Is I not yet so modern as to have lost Its Us I old customs and frequently on the streets one sees groups of in their colorful native costumes The countryside Is really the big attraction here we saw ox drawn carts and everywhere men and women working side by side In the fields with and scythe tromping and pitching hay Here all Is peace and quiet where the only excitement is an occasional mad ox Here the people ar arE area too busy and working too hard to think of war The hum of simple Czechoslovakian farm life completely drowns out the roll of neighboring Germanys Germany's war drums It Is getting very late and we must mustI be up early tomorrow so 50 in the next few days we will write and tell you about our trip from Prague on You will get a great kick out of our unique experience in Budapest BUdapest we we spent a night in Jail Love STAN AND BILL I |
