DAY Y FARi RI CITY Mr Boutwell says sars that some reports had it that the Flagstaff was the first discovery of ore at Park City but that other reports had It that discovery of ot otoro ore oro up tip Walker and Webster Gulch and I at the McHenry preceded the discovery of or ore at the Flagstaff In any case he says Flagstaff was the first I I shipper of ore from the tho Park City dis dis- According to General Kimball the late Bob Kimballs Kimball's father whom I often talked with between 1900 and 1904 and who at that time had a remarkably clear clear mind and an unusual memory the Flagstaff was discovered in October 1868 by three soldier boys from Ft Douglas who ho came over the hill from tho the Cottonwood district and In follow follow- following following following ing along the backbone or high ridge discovered the Flagstaff lode which is large and prominent and attracted at at- at They broke off ort a piece of the outcropping ore and took It down and showed It to General Kimball It was late in October and late in inthe Inthe Inthe the afternoon 1868 and a storm was I brewing so they hastily broke off ot a a. apiece apiece pi piece e of the ore and took It down as ns far faras faras as Kimballs Kimball's where night and the storm overtook them They showed the ore to I General Kimball and told him where they got It They did not make a loca loca- i tion but said that they were coming back in the spring and locate a a. claim and that they left lert a dead stick some ten feet long and some two inches in diameter with part of an old worn out flag nag tied to the pole to mark the spot They said that they were going to locate a claim the following spring and name It the Flagstaff Next June 1869 they came back and did some work with pick and shovel They ran a cut some 50 feet long and proved that tha t there ther was a good surface showing of ore However they did not record any location In the meantime their activities attracted others oth rs who prospected along the Flagstaff ridge and d dat at it the head of Thayn s canyon and at atho atthe the ho he head of Walker and Webster gulch Two more discoveries of ore were ere made in 1869 near the head of Walker and Webster gulch and near the head of Thanes canyon In 1870 ore was discovered on what was later to become the Mc Hawkeye-Mc- Henry ground These four tour discoveries were the first discoveries erles in this dis dis- The Flagstaff was never properly located and recorded by the original dis dis- discoverers discoverers coverers but was sold to a man named med Kennedy who located three claims and recorded record d them Later other claims were located by E. E P. P Ferry Kennedy started some real develop develop- development development development ment work in 1870 and in 1871 ship Ship- shipped Shipped shipped ped considerable high grade ore He had bought hought out the original discoverers and he made proper locations and had bad them recorded and this is why he is credited with the actual discovery of Flagstaff although he was not the original dis dis- discoverer discoverer coverer of the same Later E. E P. P Ferry and associates bought out Kennedy for fifty thousand dollars cash and he and his associates did considerable work at shallow depths I They also shipped considerable high grade ore and they th y also built the Mar- Mar Marsac Marsac Marsac sac mill to treat the lower grade ores This mill was a mechanical success but buta a metallurgical failure This caused the I I failure or bankruptcy of the Marsac company Later the Marsac Marsao mill was sold to the Ontario people and they changed the metallurgy by putting in a roaster The ere Cre was roasted with salt The process was known as the process A good many discoveries were made In the Park City district before the On On- Ontario tario was Vas discovered Owing to the fact that the Ontario was Infinitely better located than previous discoveries and owing to the fact that the purchasers cf of the Ontario had plenty of money mon y to develop a mine thoroughly and prop prop- properly properly properly erly the Ontario became a a. great success in a short time The owners of other promising discoveries had bad no means to develop a great mine and the locations cf of their prospects were such as to make It extremely difficult in those days to work carry carryon on any proper development All these other early discoveries which were made some years before the On On- Ontario Ontario Ontario tario was discovered have since rivaled ri the success and production of ot the On On- Ontario Ontario tario except the Flagstaff and on-I on the Flagstaff bids fair to rival any of them In time The Flagstaff lay Idle with never a pick stuck in It for almost 60 years that is is spring of ot 1876 to Novem Novem- November ber 1934 to 1934 to be exact fifty eight and one half years In the past two years we have had no rio money or very little but we have done enough to prove the very great value alue of Flagstaff CHAS MOORE Park City Utah October 21 21 1936 CROSSCUTS CROSS CUTS At the meeting of the board of directors directors directors tors of or the New Park Mining company held in Salt Lake City last week Mr R.
