Show Boy oy Scout Tells 71 of His Wonderful Trip Trip I I As the representative of Troop of of Park City on the eastern state tour taken ta en by scouts and In place of the cancelled jamboree I have been asked ask d' d to give a sketch of our trip and my y Impression of same I The trip was nothing short of or won won- wonderful Wonderful from start to finish and one could not ask to meet and travel With WIt a a. finer bunch of or fellows We left Salt Lake City on August and a n large large- crowd assembled ed at the tho depot to speed on our way way We had h d a special train equipped with convertible type coaches made down for sleeping ac accommodations a ac- ac at night We were vere f fone one thing good medical care cine as ns a n doctor traveled right with us us We arrived first fIrst at at the Moffat tunnel a wonderful piece engineering of-engineering I We Wethen Wethen then traveled on to Denver DC where we had dinner and visited the civic centers museum and capitol grounds Our next Important stop was Kansas City On leaving here herc we had our first glimpse of ot the Missouri river passing through Jet Jef Jefferson Jef ferson City the capitol and going along the banks of this famous river on thru rolling hills to St St. Louis We W visited the thc way that sausages etc are arc made certainly weakens a persons fond fond- fondness fondness ness for such things for the time tune being at least Our next stop was St. St Louis Here H re we went to the Y M. M C. C A. A across from the big Union Station where we took a grand shower sho and boy did we need It Then we had dinner at the Hotel Audi Audi- We attended the musical comedy com com- comedy edy ed Roberta with Hal Leroy In per per- son We also visited Forest Park a very beautiful and Interesting place In visit visit- visiting visiting ing Forest Park we visited the zoo zoo Shaws Shaw's gardens and Lindbergh's troph troph- ies Our next stop was Parkersburg West Vest Virginia and Just a few hours from here beautiful Potomac river we came to the I valley Fort In this vicinity was headquarters of the department of West Virginia during the Civil War From here we passed many points of historical interest Next we arrived at I Harpers Harper's Ferry where we had supper at the famous old Hill Top house Har Her Harpers Harper's Harpers Herpers Herper's pers per's Ferry was the scene of John JohnBrown's JohnBrown's JohnBrown's Browns Brown's attempt to capture the U. U S. S arsenal and was the scene of constant siege liege during the Civil War It is also the meeting place of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers which form the boundaries of Virginia West Virginia and Maryland We then traveled thru the Blue Ridge mountains and on to toward to to- toward ward the Atlantic sea board Then we came to went to o Independence Hall Curtis' Curtis Publish Publish- Publishing ing ng Plant and Betsy Ross Home While in n Independence Hall we viewed the Liberty Bell We then went to Valley Forgo Forge and viewed the historic places about here We took a side trip to At At- Atlantic lantic City New Jersey This was grand grando to o most of or the boys who had never seen tho the ocean Our swim among the big waves is something we never will forget A trip on the steel pier was also very interesting We arrived at New York next saw the lie Statute of Liberty and visited Sta- Sta Staten Staten ten en Island went up to the top of the Empire State building and we were sure up in the air then The elevators travel 1000 feet per minute You could see all allover allover allover over New York and the flit scene was very impressing i We saw a real r league ball bal 1 game ame too In New York we shook hands with James E. E West and received our ou Jamboree neckerchiefs and slides While we were in New York we stayed at Hotel Hote Victoria We visited Palmyra New York next The Boy Scouts and L L. D. D S. S missionaries its ies es met us here We had dinner at th thamous the famous amous old Joseph Smith home We saw the he beautiful Hill Cumorah monument It t was Sunday at Palmyra and we held a religious service In the Sacred Grove The spirit that prevails In the grove is very ery Inspiring Next we visited Niagara Falls a very marvelous sight especially at night We traveled from there to Windsor Canada and through a tunnel under the river to Detroit Here we went through the Ford factory and they sure turn out cars here In a hurry Then we came to Chicago with Its museum and many other Interesting sights then onto Springfield Illinois where we went to see Lincoln's home Here we were honored by being allowed to a flag lag ceremony After that we wo knew we were homeward home home- homeI homeward I ward bound and we saw Just as many Interesting things on the trip back as we did going It was truly a valuable trip from a historical standpoint be be- because because 1 cause I feel that we will all appreciate our great preat reat forefathers like Washington and Lincoln and all the others more after visiting the places they made fam lam famous famous lamous ous and now when we study history It a awill will be all the more Interesting because we can all proudly say I saw that or else I have been there r All In all this trip was grand not only historically but in forming lasting Ll friendships between the boys who took part and we a e all feel more united than ever In the Boy Scouts of America f RAY CLEGG r. r |
