Show not with the C wicked rich editor record ive been feeling mighty mighty blue tor for the past thur our years and as I 1 was getting only ten to fourteen dollars a week lor for an article or so contributed now and then to the monthly magazines and as my earthly possessions consisted of a worn out typewriter two pencils on one pen one halt half bottle of ink and a very very old suit of clothes I 1 felt that fatal disease of self pity creeping upon me now however all this Is changed that great writer and champion of the poor louis bargo has done me the honor of classifying me with the wicked and hated rich somehow in some mysterious way this gives me an opulent feeling my spirit seems to be free again a and nd I 1 r seem to soar tar far above the sordid things of poverty maybe some day I 1 shall be one of that blessed few five per cent aho own or control the other ninety five per cent or at least 95 per cent of all the wealth of course as a matter of tact fact live five per cent of the rich do not own or control in any proper sense TWENTY FIVE PER CENT of the wealth of the country so much tor for a little nonsense lets as it if we can fix our minds on in matters a tiers I 1 of more importance to us and to our neighbors and to the country perhaps a little background and begging your pardon a little personal background will serve better to introduce this third article of EL a series of six my folks were democrats for genera alons and back in 1884 when I 1 was just a youngster I 1 was made to believe that all our troubles would be over if grover Grove cleveland should be elected well he was elected and nothing come of it but more hard times then men bryan came along at the end ot of Clev elands second term with a cure rik ah that wag far worse than the disease I 1 was almost a fanatic on the subject of using silver along 7 with th gold old as our money base but I 1 IT could ull agn not ot stomach i bryans hii wild ca scheme to drive gold out of the country altogether and put the country on a single silver standard I 1 was getting old enough to read and tudy study the best thoughts of our wisest and most unselfish men and I 1 was setting bettini tini old enough to think lor for myself and I 1 resolved to join the republican party arty I 1 stay stayed edwith with the republican party through ahro gh all its thieving and lying and d cagy and pulling the wool over the he farmers fan ners eyes and ng the laboring man until 1932 1 I say I 1 stayed with the republican party for exactly thirty six bin years 1898 1896 to 1932 with all its short comings coin ings because I 1 considered the democratic party to be guilty ot of all the tins bills of omission and commission of which the republican party could boast with the additional gin eln of incompetency com potency in 1932 w with ith the republican party offering fering only a drink out 0 of the same old bottle that had brought delirium cremens tremens on the country and the socialist party without a single idea above the intelligence ot I 1 a jackass jack abs I 1 decided to j loin 0 in the democratic party again find and w whoop hoop things up a bit tor for roosevelt well believe it or not as ripley I 1 says I 1 had the biggest surprise ot of mya rny life no president in our entire history has bas ever acted so promptly end and so vigorously and so wisely as roosevelt Rooe evelt acted not even washington or lincoln within six weeks the most terrible situation this country has ever raced faced in time ot of peace or war either except valley forge was turned nto into hope joy and confidence within ten weeks the bulte country was actually experiencing quite la a boom and everyone was predicting better times than the country had ever yet experienced and within a few short months at that then came N 1 I R A an and d the dom li j of 0 the amer american can federation of 0 ot of the same labor and the domination old aroid or of pirates that had dominated the republican party tor for 60 years more that or less then the prosperity machine I 1 was just getting up speed in high gear slowed down and down to the lowest ot of low gears again then along came the election of 1934 with the results that you know it Is said that the election gave roosevelt i N I 1 most ot of the to scrap the courage A P F to put the R A and the courage 0 L in its place and put a few hundred thousand industrialists in their advantage ot of N I 1 who had taken place R A and the repeal ot of the antitrust anti trust 25 per cent to 50 laws to boost prices per cent without any very good reason in most cases now it seems that roosevelt Is determined to put the A P F 0 L end and a few hundred thousand industrialists in their february it looks places but today like congress Is overawed over awed by two of the most powerful lobbies the world has ever known the A F r 0 L and the industrialists altogether both number less than 6 per cent of 0 the total population and are we to be ruled by these two 1 powerful blocks it looks that way just now and business Is beginning to slow up again after the election last fall business throughout the country began to pick up with a bang and continued to pick up even in the face of uncertainty dainty as to the gold decision but with the deadlock in congress just now abu business standstill stand still again in n C as Is almost at a I 1 I 1 roosevelt has been right in two out ot of three great decisions which had to be made that Is 1 I 1 a remodeling of the money system 2 putting the farmer on EL a better economic basis 3 putting business and labor on a better and lust just er economic basis with the first two he has made what should be considered d I 1 II 11 I 1 think a great success and even two out ort of three Is a fine record and all praise to him tor for a very tine fine record with the third he has made a failure but it appears to me that he be now sees his error and Is sincerely desirous ot of correcting the error will a cowardly congress thinking mostly of how to get elected again and in deadly fear ot of those two powerful lobbies above mentioned permit the president to work out a proper solution to the third problem which will be tor for the lasting benefit ot all ot of us instead ot of benefit to two powerful blocks it if these powerful blocks have their way we all go down to ruin together and they with us signed MRS IRS MARIANSKI park city utah february 25 1935 |
