Show P I 1 sale MINISTERS their job I 1 w was as asked to address a luncheon club comp composed ased entirely ot of ministers riot not long ago th they y wanted me to talk about the worlds economic troubles and how to cure them I 1 told them that I 1 knew ot of no wholesale hole sale method ot of salvation either in t the he spiritual ual world or the economic world I 1 am t on an individualist and believe that the world gets no better than the men and women in it I 1 know ot of no way ot of legislating honesty and morality into the human race I 1 suggested to the ministers that the trouble with the world was that we had been worshiping the golden calf so long that we had forgotten the golden rule and that it might be more to the purpose it if instead ot of interesting them delves in social reforms in fix the mass they concentrated their attention upon the effort to persuade individuals one by one me to live honorable upright and moral lives it if everybody did that there woula bo be no need for most of our laws CHILDREN place to begin the way to make the world better Is to begin with the children by the time a child Is terl ten or twelve its character so far as its social relations are concerned is pretty well formed either it has been so spoiled that it never will be any good or it has learned that there are certain lines ot of conduct which the world at large wont tolerate and shapes its actions accordingly in six an ideal social organization every child cd would be taught from wancy infancy that it has no rights that are superior to the rights of everybody else that is what liberty and equality simm simmer do down to it if aad everybody realized and abed up upon tiit that principle nobody would infringe on any of the rights of anybody else and we WoUl dUt need nd liny any government at au an TEACHING a new efteni 6 stem 1 I hiram college Is trying out a new 0 system 6 tem of teaching which sounds to me 2 so rational that I 1 wonder it has neve been adopted before instead of skipping from one subject to another students are given intensive study in a single subject tor for a long period then another and so on it seems to me that a thorough mastery of one subject can be got in this sway way better than by a series of scattered hours interrupted by the need to prepare for work in other courses and I 1 dont see why it work in schools far below college grade I 1 welcome every new educational experiment peri ment because I 1 believe none ot of the systems evolved so tar far Is as good als it ought to be or could be FACTS and facts nothing Is harder to get hold of in this world than facts I 1 heard a man say the other day in 6 public address that there are twenty million men out ot of employment in this 13 country A few hours later I 1 heard another speaker declare that all the farmers in the tha united states were starving I 1 knew neither ot of those statements was true but I 1 dont know 0 w where and how to get at the facts of unemployed or the number as to 0 the number of distressed farmers my main reaction to such exaggerated statements Is that probably everybody in lying about them nothing Is more misleading than bare facts either A tact fact Is not enough unless one knows all the other facts that go with it most ot of us know too many facts that arent so by that I 1 mean that we dont understand the re relation latton ot of the facts we know to other facts that we dont know I 1 have long since stopped trying to draw conclusions irom from single facts the conclusions usually turn out wrong because someone comes along with a a tact fact I 1 know D MONSTERS land new one i proof that there are strange hearts beasts in the sea was furnished a couple of weeks ago when a sea monster unlike anything known to science was cast up on the shore or of prance france it had a head like a camel on a neck four feet long and its 20 foot body five feet thick had scanty stiff hairs like those of an elephant so much entine sen i g genuine enu evidence C e of their existence folk who have seen them are not so hesitant i about telling what they have seen they are not so likely to be laughed at some scientists have put forward the suggestion that some volcanic upheaval in the ocean depths has driven these andi monsters from their secret haunts and that they are looking tor for new homes 1 others
