Show american legion annual convention the fifteenth annual department convention venti oll ol of the american legion was held at ogden utah august and legionnaire ors ora bundy mayor of ogden welcomed the delegates and visitors at the opening session which was held at the legion chateau the department commander charles R mabey ex governor of utah introduced frank E samuel the national adjutant whose remarks was devoted to an outline ot of the policies of the american legion lie he stated the four point program to be followed in the future as first A governmental policy of equal treatment to veterans and dependents of all wars second A permanent classification and standardization of benefits for all classes of veterans and their dependents of all wars past and future upon which both the government and defenders can rely third A governmental policy contemplating adequate compensation and hospitalization tor for all veterans with war connected service disabilities without regard to their financial status or other means of support fourth A governmental policy recognizing that all incapacitated veterans without means of support are charges and wards of the national government and not of states and local communities or of public charity the national adjutant stated that the american legion Is for america first that it will and Is supporting the president s and the national government in its efforts to bring back to the people of the country the long wished for prosperity and Is devoting itself in unselfish devotion to this cause george W malone state engineer of nevada was indorsed endorsed Indor sed by the convention as a candidate for national commander at the chicago convention next october r in his bis remarks mr malone stated that in all civilized countries tor for hundreds of years a precedent has been established that any disabled veteran who had served a central government in time ot of emergency shall be cared tor for by that government his war service therefore Is a specific reason for his being a national instead of a local problem he further stated that during the last four months the machinery which had been carefully worked out and built up during the last fifteen years had been thrown out of gear this action has been largely brought ab about by several years of organized propaganda 0 of f the economy league a subsidiary of the national chamber of commerce he stated that a man vho aho lost a loot foot unloading a box car at norfolk or bordeaux was just as much in the war as a mari man who met with the same loss in the front line in the forest of the argonne both offered their lives in the emergency and both lost ft a foot for the fame arne cause in analyzing the cst c ct of war he includes first the cost of preparedness second the carrying on of the actual co conflict Anict third the cost of caring for the disabled men who served 1 tb the emergency in summing up mr malone declared that tile the care of the bisp bed Is a part of the cost of war and li is properly charged to our national de ff frn ne e system the cost of caring tor for the disabled veteran Is defina definitely tely a national dad and not cot a local responsibility th tha legion posts from coi cairon ubon county v here a strike was impending tottered a rako resolution lution which stated that the legion 1 its BS an organization would not participate I 1 in any way in any industrial conflict that such action was repugnant to the legion but that the legion would support the officers of the national or state governments in the preservation of law and order the resolution was adopted I 1 unanimously by the cepi department ir ament in convention assembled gus becker ot of the becker products company served a delicious buffet luncheon at his plant to a very large number of legionnaires and their frienda friend tho liquid refreshments consisted of lime rickey soda water slid and other nonalcoholic gloo alcoholic holle bever beverages agns an open ar program was given consisting of cl music speech by the governor ir 11 II eloon a un ted states senator and dignitaries this program was broadcast throughout the intermountain states the herman baker post ot of ogden put on a splendid evening street parade four drum corps corpa contested tor for a prize was won by provo W J BARDSLEY adjutant |
