lull full length of charlie and was of interest to his many friends lends Ir we wish him a sate safe and pleasant journey this common place remark Is not all that the notice aroused in me rather this piece of news newa aroused some old memories and brought a group of old time pictures into the back ground in sharp contrast with a modern foreground I 1 see the shields elds bros store adjoining the lots of our home on oil main street park city central east side I 1 see john and charles in the midst of their general merchandise out side Is their mule team wagon delivery well qualified to hustle through the springtime spring time mud of main street and to sweat its way up the stiff hill grades then to make time on the down hill runs now in the fore ground Is a paved street and an auto truck and a store somewhere else that great hawk in the sky of the old background seen in the distance comes in sight eight again with a distant hum that becomes a booming roar and that hawk thing takes on bulk a plane man has taken to the sky the dream my dream has come true sixty years ago I 1 made a flying machine that ended only in hopes I 1 suppose as I 1 lean across the counter of that old time shields store talking to i charlie about the ore showing in the green Al monster onster and the walker and webster on crescent ridge I 1 should propose that he be take an air plane to st louis on his way to ireland imagine the look in his bis eyes to go back there and look forward fifty years just across the years or just across i the street how bow easy before the board I 1 sidewalks were down on each side of train main street each store place had its level I 1 porch walk with steps down to the neati next bleiel the longer the level porch the thel more steps below it and the more un I 1 certainty tor for the toot foot passengers old danny dalton short and be hiski 1 ered so quiet between pay days that eliat lie one knew of his existence unless it I 1 was the timekeeper at the mine when I 1 lie he got his load at payday pay day he was still I 1 ul danny I 1 see him again trying I 1 to negotiate those frequent side sidewalk walk i steps with patient care he lets each each foot I 1 down clown barely maintaining his bis balance as twisted buckled and bent he be at last I 1 straightens up at the level below with a I 1 I 1 sigh elgh of satisfaction well danny youl you I 1 made it I 1 and his invariable reply madea made I 1 with a grin was hannah broke her legi fill all the same many a thumb nail sketch lifts thel the veil of memory and stalks across the stage of park cites old time main streeta street some of them bring a smile and some I 1 are as tragic as sudden death there was I 1 I 1 johnny hale with his dark sweeping i i mustache a gallant sport was johnny never drunk enough tt quarrel and seli dom sober when in town he made a rash bet that he be would begin at upper main and drink at every place that sold the stuff stua go down on an the right sidel side I 1 and return on the opposite side miss no place and still be able to get back to the I 1 ontario in one hour johnny was a real general when he had bad drunk his bis way down to Kim klemballa kimballs balls stable he hired a horse the boys boosted him into the sadi dle die then he rode into every saloon and took his stuff sitting on th the e horse on we his way back to complete the I 1 loop 1 aop borje C then on n doubled over the pommel mmel he clung to the horse and got to the mine I 1 there was milt thomas and his texas yell in the quiet evening the sun gonel gone down with a jolly crowd he stands on the porch of dominick saloon across the street from mrs Wal dens boarding house and greenbauml Green baums store and milt sends into the clear quiet air a long drawn whoop chihuahua the old time texas yell shrill and clear the loudest most penetrating yell ever heard in park city again and again he be had to repeat that yell from mill milts 1 ample I mouth and grinning countenance that was the most soul boul stirring triumphant shout eliout that had ever been heard in camp his treating friends were legion but milt limited hk his performance to ten shouts an I 1 evening I 1 am sure there were none to i compte comp te with that texas yell milt was convial but avoided too much stun stuff and he changed it all for the charm of a girl my father joined the happy pair milton and All minerva nerva something of a union the judge remarked that first greeting of milts was early 77 and my recollection Is that up to that time no homicide had bad tainted the pure mountain air of park city A pageant of events indeed could the days gone by assemble their history and go marching along under our present view start stall from Dud duelers lers old basement brewery up town and parade down to Kim klemballa kimballs balls stable at the foot of main street about 58 bears ears since that was made straight and the turn at the top made wider well charlie shields out dates me for utah it if he
