Show I 1 V ap H by FIRED HOLMES washington correspondent of the park washington D C june ath while the campaign lor for the democratic presidential nomination continues to be the most engrossing and intriguing political puzzle here in washington from a general outlook it must be admitted that it has gradually become less and less complex through a process of elimination week before last owen D young of 0 new york with an impressive although tar far from noisy following voluntarily eliminated himself from the picture last week speaker john N garner ot of texas who early carly demonstrated such qualities of constructive tive leadership as to him a most formidable candidate harmed or helped as you prefer by intensive support of the hearst publications and WU wit ila llam G mcadoo of 0 california Is said chave to have completely smothered his own boom under a blanket of however it must be remembered that the elimination of 0 a candidate voluntary or involuntary Is one thing preserving that state of elimination Is quite another the unprecedented and disastrous defeat ol of allred alfred E smith in 1928 augmented by his subsequent declarations was supposed to have definitely eliminated the happy warrior irom from the 1932 democratic steeple chase but new yorks ex governor eventually concluded not to stay eliminated and as a matter ot of fact it would now appear that maybe alter after all he been owen youngs announced conclusion not to become a candidate in any circumstances circumstance e s was looked upon here as his final elimination irom from therace the race it was believed that it removed from the list of possible contenders a man who might have strongly appealed to the convention ven tion in tact fact it would seem to have dev developed elope d that there Is much more sentiment tor for young for president now that he has taken himself out of the list of democratic possibilities than there was before his self elimination it if they should get panicky out in chicago over a smith roosevelt deadlock mr Y young oung might find it exceedingly hard to stay eliminated As for mr garner gamer no one not even Ms bis political adversaries questions the speakers good falth faith and sincerity in sponsoring a measure tor for direct r relict ellef 0 of o the starving and suffering acore in this country at the same time president hoover has labeled the garner bill the most gigantic pork barrel ever proposed to the american congress secretary of war hurley adds his criticism to that expressed by the president insisting that the garner proposal would substitute wasteful extravagance tor for intelligent well balanced productive construction secretary hurley spoke emoke with authority reinforced re by the opinion of 0 his expert advisers president hoover show showed ed clearly how lew few men would be put to work by enactment of the garner bill and secretary ol of the treasury mills gave tact fact and figures those in high places in both the financial and the industrial worlds insist that the proposed legislation would utterly fall to afford ble relief bellet taking the unprecedented course ot of testifying before the house ways and means committee in behalf ot of his bill speaker garner made a vigorous plea pica tor for the governmental ern mental leadership he holds but be failed to tell the american people how it Is possible to balance the budget and at the th some same time impose this new burden on the federal treasury whether or not his bill it if enacted would afford the measure of relief he claims tor for it it Is unfortunate lor for mr garner that it comes at a time when the country is demanding in no uncertain manner a balancing ot of the governments budget so that finan cial stability may be restored and a real return to business be begun at a time when congress Is attempting to irame frame a revenue bill which will raise more than a billion dollars of additional revenue from the people and at a time when congress is at work on an economy program part or of which cuts the wages of government workers criticism ot of the garner bel by the president by his cabinet by the tew few remaining real statesmen in congress by the press irrespective ol of partisanship san ship by outstanding financiers and industrialists by the thinking public generally had its effect upon the involuntary candidacy of mr garner for the democratic presidential nomination but it did not go so tar far as to destroy faith in the purity ot of his motives but mr garner Is thought to have fallen into the common error ot not being willing to let well enough alone naturally he may hav anve c been a little stung by president hoovers e rs severe arraignment of his bis plan pian to enter upon a vast pro program ram of federal building fill all over the country but it Is not felt that this excuses him tor for the language he used in reply alter after commenting on president hoovers opposition as not unexpected he remar remarked acidly the democrats did not expect to receive real operation cooperation co from the president in any matter benefiting the masses and those who might be termed the middle class ot of american people we e are arc undoubtedly in the midst oi of a complex and unprecedented emergency and it Is not surprising that opinions ot of congress and in the administration differ regarding what should be done there are discredited prescribe rs ot of impossible pani areas provoking but a smile ot of tolerance but there Is no reason to question the i motives ot of or to fling gratuitous suspicions at those who nie ale honestly even it mistakenly striving to do what they bellev believe to be best beat and right but for speaker garner to intimate that the president Is secretly hostile to measures that will benefit the great mass ot of americans Is an uns unspeakable pea kable political presumption that tha t has hurt its author more than its intended victim right or wrong that settled mr garner someone should have reminded him ot of an old old story when the cat got through with the parrot polly solemnly scrutinized his entire wardrobe transformed into a green red rea and yellow ina mat t at the base of the pedestal and indulged in the semi historic remark 1 I guess I 1 talk too damn much place of honor she did you get hurt when you were on the eleven jack no it was while the eleven were on me |
