Show national nation 1 I affairs by FRANK P LITSCHERT with the approach of the end of the year there is bound to be a quickening ot of interest in national politics for the alboth p past st few months the headquarters of 0 both political parties have been unusually quiet in washington this has been due to more than one reason first there has been a disposition to let poll tics bics play second fiddle while president hoover was seeking to outline a program tor for restoring confidence at home and one for or agreement with european nations on disarmament and other questions abroad another reason is financial d al with hard times upon us political organizations have suffered along with everyone and funds for campaigning have been none too easy cosy th b get the republican national committee wll will meet in the middle of december however for or the purpose of selecting a meeting place for republicans in 1932 and after that the democratic national committee will hold bold a meeting tor for the tee purpose of selecting a city tor for the 1932 democratic national convention then will follow state primaries and conventions and before we know it we will be in the midst of another presidential campaign just at present judging from newspaper gossip there seems to be more interest in the identity of the democratic standard bearer in 1932 this Is naturally true because the democratic party Is out of power and the presidential field Is wide open for some time of course franklin D roosevelt governor of new york has been out in front but there are shrewd politicians poli ticla who w h 0 think that he may develop hla his as maximum ax lm strength too early in the game A recent poll of democratic newspapers indicated that the majority of them thought that roosevelt would be nominated although the majority sentiment of the editors themselves favored newton D baker the secretary of war in president wilsons Wll Wil sons cabinet roosevelt Is said to be very ery strong g fa the south and west dur during ag aby the early part of the year he was making rapid strides toward the nomination of late however his progress has not been so rapid whether ther this Is due to a reversal I 1 in sentiment or to the belief of his managers that he had been gathering I 1 strength too early and too rapidly re mains to be seen at any rate the horizon is not so cloudless from A mr jr Roosevel ts viewpoint as it was a fe ew w months ago this Is in a measure d due U e to the reported rift between governo roosevelt and no less a figure than al smith the democratic standard bearer of 1928 political developments during the past tew few weeks fleeks indicate that smith and tammany may not be so enthusiastic over governor Roosevel ts candidacy RS as might be anticipated one ot of the first evidences ot of this came in mr smiths opposition to governor roose pet scheme for handling the forestry question ta in new mew york the question 1 Is in its itself e if of course not a national issue but the significance lies in the opposition on the part ot of mr smith which seemed a little more vehement than the nature ot of the question warranted 1 whether tammany and mr smith will oppose governor roosevelt openly in the coming convention remains to be seen and it Is only fair to say that while tammany opposition might injure mr Roosevel ts chances in new york and other eastern states it would tend to help him in the west and south in the meantime people over the country are beginning to talk about the qualifications and prospects of jim reed of missouri for the nomination it i Is admitted that it if nominated he would be a formidable candidate recent developments have tended to bring international issues to the forefront and it Is among issues of this sort that senator reed beed shines he opposes american membership in the lea league gu e of natto nations ris and the world court Is opposed to debt cancellation cel lation and the interference of uncle sam in european affairs there can be little doubt that these views of jim reed are very popular in the country espee especially f ally west of the alleghenies and the recrudescence of internationalist issues might make the former senator irom from missouri a formidable and dangerous candidate |
