Show THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS THIS 1 Is a democracy upon that rock Is bullied our public school system the two are linked by indissoluble ties they are equal partners and sharers in the struggles cles and successes of an advancing race write sr dennis brummitt attorney general state of north carolina in the united states dally daily ile he continued in part this school system must fit tile alie ultimate purpose of the social and political institutions of which it la Is a part that purpose Is not culture alone it Is not national power nor Is It simply training for leadership it if 14 all of these in part and yet more than all of these in the whole there are other and more basic needs in a twentieth centar century v social order we have approached democracy in the political control of government tile the policies and actions of parties and office holders recurrently come up tor for review by tile the people for the present at least we continue to choose our public officials fici als democracy and the public school system t em working together have brought I 1 government under the control of the average man again in concert they hae opened the doors of the schoolhouse to all on equal terms together they must find the solution of our soda social a nd and economic problems to the educated citizenship of the future democracy must and will be not simply the substance of things hoped tor for but the evidence of things known we live have hare conie come to a new economic age it Is one wherein more than ever before the interest of one Is that of fill all for tile the future business problems will revolve around not the production of goods but their consumption prosperity will depend more and more upon the increasing number of those able to buy and thus share in the comforts and conveniences sentences ces of life agriculture and industry cannot continue at the level which machinery has now established esta bUshed unless they find a market for their products in tile bu buying ing power of the whole adult population gainfully employed unless we meet this new challenge we have reached the point ot of diminishing returns from our r utilization of this su marcelous mar arTela relous energy here then is the great task k of democracy and the he public school system in the past they have acted together in tile the future they must most continue to do so they must act together and thus preserve our Individual individualistic litto system of industry agriculture government society within that system mankind may grow character be built and a great civilization be developed it beckons altti ith glamorous appeal to youth for it tests his powers calls forth the best that Is in him offers him a free field equal opportunity port unity and the just reward renard of his merits and his efforts these two do not work alone here at this point upon one great highway I 1 meet all the forces which control or affect human life here then Is the task tak of all these of religion education democracy mo cracy politics politic law government industry business economics all the successes which lie ile behind us all our rich dreams tor for the future meet and cling and here color what we must or mill do this school system must pro dace the necessary cesary ne leadership nut but that alone Is not sufficient in this age no great question can be settled outside it if the will and desire of the mass ot of the people in all ages men have sought to adjust the mechanism they use to the load to ie be carried it was so in the time of 0 the wooden plow and oner energy ay alone it must be so now in this age of power the task of the educational machine grows not lighter but heavier surely it Is 19 tile the part ot of wisdom to strengthen not weaken it here Is a labor that never ends here Is a problem which increases in magnitude tude the nearer no ne seem to approach its solution here Is a task in progress Is attainment As one class passes out oat from the high school and the college another and larger one takes its place they will continue to crowd up upon 0 n us in imagination we hear their countless footfalls foot falli as the coming generation move up the steps and along the halls balls ot of our school buildings in the years ahead al ways it will be necessary to strain at our resources in the effort to meet the need |
