Show new theory for coalville Co alville structure geologists who have been studying the chalk creek structure located near coal ville utah have advanced a new theody which has attracted considerable filing in the area and plans are under formulation 1 lor for the sinking ot of a new test upon the structure the new theory it Is believed warrants the sinking of 0 an another well and Is a direct reversal ot of the geology laid down for the chalk creek area both by government and independent according to recent discoveries made by R E redden engineer or of coalville Co alville and confirmed by ed watson well known western geologist the well drilled for oil on the structure approximately eight years ago was started several hundred feet below the geological horizon for which it was started the well was located near the intersection ot of two well defined systems of faulting being bounded on the west and east by strike faults and on the north I 1 by a dip fault system all within a radius of feet from the well the aspen horizon which was the objective of the well by heretofore unrecognized folding had been lifted to a higher point and at a point where drilling was started had been eroded oil off the dome it Is believed mr watson was recently induced by mr redden to make an examination of the situation and found the aspen exposed above the chalk creek well the mowry shale member ot of the aspen which is the we big sand ot of wyoming aj at this point Is over feet thick art and is ca capped plied by a massive drw sandstone member which throughout the district dietrict measures from to teet feet thick mr redden declares at the base of the mowry member be st states tes there Is another hard massive dark dark gray sandstone which caps a sili ferous dark carboniferous shale zone this sand in his opinion under proper conditions and cover should be a producer another well was commenced on the structure in 1921 at Co coalville alville city near the high school and was bottomed at feet after striking a flow of hot salt water and showings of gas this well according to mr redden shows that the bit stopped near the base of the spring canyon coal series within a few teet feet from the top of the massive sandstone cap rock of the mowry the objective horizon west of a big fault at the mouth of ithe the narrows of chalk creek the aspen is I 1 under cover and it Is on this structure that has attracted the attention of leas ers tor for the past four months he states lors approximately 80 per cent of the acreage has been leased and mr redden expects drilling to start as soon as winter breaks to test the new theory sundays sal salt lake tribune |
