event 0 0 it was just eleven years since boy lawrence and dad ate thanksgiving dinner together shortly after that the boy lett left for college since then the home has only been visited by him marriage and practising practicing his profession in other climes being the cause thereof it was our first thanksgiving dinner with dr and mrs and a happy one and one long to be remembered 0 0 to round out the holiday an auto ride was token taken in the early evening at after a several mile drive on the paved roads a turn was taken off of the always crowed crowded highways into a hilly and apparently sp patently ly neglected section of country over dirt roads that reminded us of park city and adjacent sections section before good roads were thought of sidling aids ing in places deeply furrowed and extremely bumpy but nevertheless enjoyable because of the change and now novelty of poor roads and hard driving for several miles barrenness surrounded us then came signs of habitation huts and shacks occupied by japs then truck gardens and more japs more barrenness ascending a hill in the distance the bright lights of crowded highways were seen and a few miles more of bumps and careful driving hard surfaced roads were again encountered then a smooth a ting ride home it was a drive not often tak taken en by white folk foik but pleasurable just the same john J raskob democratic national manager and capitalist in writing for one ot of the magazines advocating a five day week lor for the laboring man and giving logical reasons why also expressed the hope and belief that in the near future all holidays except christmas would be celebrated on mondays he says patriotism and sentiment would suffer no injury if the fourth of july memorial day columbus day thanksgiving day and other holidays were always celebrated on the nearest monday production would halt less than it does now I 1 when a holiday falls in the middle of I 1 the week but consumption would be powerfully stimulated with saturday I 1 sunday and monday ahead of them people would really start out to do things As a sees it A short skirt an a boyish bob makes a funny combination on her head except ears an on her legs except eyes troubles seem to be unending tor for alexander pantages the multi m alre aire now in jail for one to alft fifty y y yeara a for criminal assault on a seventeen ye year ar old girl he Is having all kinds of law suits piled on him and his future notwithstanding his many minions millions Is anything but rosy jack dempsey the pug Is the last to bring suit against him for several thousand dollars for breach of contract just as a sort of a tryout the past yeek dad went by street car to los angeles he walked ifer a few blocks admiring the beautiful christmas street decorations co of the big city and gazing at shop windows but the dodging squirming and wiggling through the immense crowds the waiting and worry of crossing the streets were too much for his slow gait and unsteady nerves and he be was thankful to get back to the station to board the car for home 1 I think of 0 all lifes many cares and all the burdens mortal bears bear a the sweetest source of weariness dearine ss Is that which parents fond possess nor tame fame nor fortune bring such joy As does a little girl or boy A GUEST 0 it looks very much as it if the present se session of congress will ha e a fight and a hard one over the prohibition question with chances perhaps in ili favor of at least modification of the present law it Is time something happened for conditions I 1 dit lons are becoming worse and worse with new evidence every day that the i prohibition law Is an absolute failure apparently impossible of t enforcement I 1 it I 1 under tinder the lecent ruling of the illinois federal judge the writer of this column colum Is a felon and under the law should now be looking out between bars in a federal pilson instead of pounding away on a borrowed typewriter why well i listen last week he took a rather longi long I 1 walk for him and feeling a bit fatigued went in a drug store and ordered a i long soft drink for the rest it would 1 give him while af acthen the counter two well dressed men and a rather good looking well dressed woman evidently tourists tor for they just got out of their car came in and seated themselves at the counter first they ordered a sandwich C an and after sizing dad up and evidently del deciding C him harmless asked for three thre e tumblers cracked ice and the seltzer boti I 1 tle tie with a wink at the fountain clerk the roan man occupying the stool next to tho the writer took from his hip pocket a silver mounted flask and poured about three fingers on the ice in each of the three 1 glasses classes then added the seltzer water and 1 smacking their lips in tion tills this act was repeated before the icahn left the counter yes it was ahls ey in the flask for the fumes came its his way giving a sort of a hurt celing feeling for not being asked tto indulge 11 under the law as interpreted by the illinois illnois Ill jurist dad should have immediately lately reported tile the matter to a cop phoned the federal officers which he li failed called to do hence his felonious act our conscience however Is somewhat eased by realizing there are millions in same box 0 that in these days of decolon renar render and enforcement non it must be that booze seeing booze booz 0 tot booze making booze serving and buying Is a felony but what does it make none whatever continued on pago four FOU
