candles candies are delicious thol the reporter sampled some but they will not be distributed for general consumption until christmas morning the science department where sixty girls girl work has been a boular rendezvous the past weeks coughing sneezing and the use ot of handkerchiefs have been the most interesting te diversion all this week colds are indeed popular one instructor declared she must be deat deaf zor for she hear the discussions ol of students not deat deaf dear teachers just coughing and sneezing aunt sophy takes charge a humorous one act farce will be presented to the greenwood acting as judge each topic showed careful preparation and thought of the fifteen speeches given six were chosen for the final contest next tuesday tho the winners were george clark larry ryan harris mills vyla yet tates e s willets payne and ahva tree books B boks long hidden in some remote corner of the lockers were guiltily taken from their resting place this week study halls became rne haven of ambitious seniors ominous words were uttered by the faculty that sent students cramming through more books the struggle for knowledge grew tense then on the black board the fatal word was written examinations I 1 YATES 28 report tho the juniors submit the following speech to prove that the students of the american history class are doing some serious thinking this is one of the many speeches that have been submitted during the past week and it was given by miss bertha ralls rails we wit who 0 are representing the states of the united un eted states of america have a great task before us that task Is to decide and make a constitution and to organize a suitable government by which wo we can carry on our governmental ot of fairs in harmony and goodwill good will we have come to the question shall each state have an equal number of representatives presenta tives in the congress of the national government or shall ane representation sen tation be acco according to population I 1 that both houses 0 of congress or at least one house of congress should have an equal number of congressmen from each state rega ruiess of the size of cinat state it representation Is accord ing to population only the largely populated states shall have the majority over the smaller ones they will have the vico in governmental creations reat lons ions the smaller states will have to sit back and let the densely populated states dictate to them they will bo be children in their voice in the government the small states contributed all they could toward our winning of independence should not they be given a just share now in the government the smaller states have just as important questions to be dealt with just as important needs to be fulfilled but it if these factors were canceled by majority the whole nation would be the loser not just the small states if representation were according to POWs tion tho the larger states will tyrannize over ove and perhaps actually conquer the smaller states going back to early history it Is proved that the larger countries took an advantage of the smaller ones at the time of louis XIV the chief object of statesmen was to keep any one country from growing too strong for its neighbors safety this was called the balance of power france was continually threatening the small countries international morality was low and nations were willing to let a strong power rule a weaker one it they could find compensation themselves by robbing some other weak state do e want this to occur within our own united states shall we let ourselves get into such a state of low morality do we want to be working against ono one another the french revolution Is another historical case in which the majority ruled the minority the mass of people went mad and put many innocent people to death by the cruel means of the guillotine in 1700 ireland was found to rebell because of the tyrannical treatment of england england was a great power she ruled ireland without any representation from her neighboring country which was not so great a power in 1877 78 the cruel treatment of the Bug Bu garlans arians by the turks was a case of a great number over a smaller number the turks destroyed the homes and towns of the th bulgarians Bulga rians massacred most of the people and put many ot of the women into horrible slavery the miserable and selfish interference by the great powers put the development ol of the balkan states back tor for a third of a century the great powers were the majority while the balkans were merely the minority and suffered from the unjust treatment of the powers therefore I 1 believe to have an ideal american government which wilt will be strong and progressive there should be an eagal number of reprise representatives n natives which will bo be fair to both the la large rge and smal states BERRY sophomore report this week has been rather strenuous for the classes because of the exams
