Show dr L C snow again remarks editor park record park city utah otah we wish to correct certain statements found ina in a letter to the record ot of october by superintendent alston this letter purports per ports to comment on a com muni from me to the record of september 24 1927 regarding our troubles in starting our children in the philadelphia schools the of circumstances r curri stances ot of last year at park city are now facts and pages of comments by mr alston will not altar them our children attended school th there re a and nd their monthly report cards plus their promotion cards testily testify to their good work phyllls phyllis took her freshman year and passed with A rating undoubtedly she was a sophomore there we presumed that her list ot of subjects was perfectly satisfactory to the faculty they never offered any reason to think otherwise in fact they sent us her monthly report card with A marks which naturally made us proud ot of her just before leaving park city we requested a list of credits and mr alston very kindly prepared pie pared one for us he voluntarily wrote a letter of commendation and personally assured us that phyllls phyllis was an A student with standard credits and would not have trouble entering and high school apparently until I 1 wrote mr alston of our troubles everything was perfectly satisfactory phyllls phyllis attempted to enter the west philadelphia high school which has an enrollment of students and was unable to enter the sophomore class without a condition they accepted all her credits without question but she d did I 1 d not have enough of them at park city she carr carried I 1 ed tour four unite built a ot of credits or all that they would permit her to carry it if she could have taken one more unit of work she would have been fully quail fled fied any subject would have answered the purpose such asa science biology art or a foreign language A foreign language Is not demanded here in the freshman year nor was it at park city it t never hiis has been a question of a foreign la language ri guage every freshman student of last ast year whether he took a foreign language or not would have been disqualified here just as was phyllis more work Is crowded d d into the district school or up inh t to the seventh grade the eighth grade or junior high does very similar work to the freshman high at park city the tenth grade or freshman high therefore does a little more work than the park high requires instead of explaining the difficulties we encountered in some sIm sirlilar lIlar manner superintendent alston vainly attempted to pass the duck buck the park city school system needs some readjustments 1 long along these lines to make it fit other school systems instead of making these matters clear mr alston asserts that mrs snow and I 1 are to blame by not allowing phyllis to take a foreign language last year he also states that the faculty wed tiled tor for two weeks to persuade us 10 W let her take a foreign language and that we refused we emphatically deny this accusation cusa cus tion atlon and hereby assert that at no I 1 time or place did the principal superintendent or faculty attempt to persuade us its to let phallis phi ills take a foreign language we never had bad the opportunity to refuse it seems most extraordinary that we should have resisted the per nua nu ion ilon lor for two weeks and not know anything about it why Is this bugaboo argument about a foreign language intro I 1 deuced now the Phi philadelphia ladelpha high school has not dern demanded a foreign language it Is not here a required freshman subject it was waff not a required freshman subject c t at park city last year either there were several ral students who d did id not take spanish h last year at park city why all this aage fuis about nothing A foreign langu age would have served the same purpose gia any ny other subject namely to give ad N AL dit ional credits art biology science etc would all have been equally valuable mr aito alston I 1 farther states that he would have been s surprised surprised it if phyllis had been accepted as a sophomore what changed his mind between september and october bilth ile he gave both mrs snow and I 1 perfect assurance that she was standard and would be accepted this was on september irth and on october bilth he states that it if she had been accepted he would have been surprised it Is my conviction that in fix september lie he expressed his true convictions this october belated confession that an A grade student of the part park high school was known to him to be disqualified tor for entrance to another high school Is regret able it if that condition was known to exist last year why were we not taken into hla his confidence when will it be corrected he certainly can not now claim that phyllls phyllis did not meet the school requirements quire ments II if requirements do not require and are not to be enforced then why have requirements perhaps school requirements are like political platforms used when they serve some one ones s purpose we have lived many years in park city and during that time continuously boosted tor for park city and her institutions we are still interested and I 1 loyal 0 aal yal like most zealous parents we have danied wanted the best beat educational opportunities when we discovered the misfit with the philadelphia adelphia la schools I 1 wrote the park city school authorities with the hope of constructively improving the educational facilities public cognizance ot of possible weakness Is a healthy sign of progress it Is our earnest hope that other park city students will not meet similar difficulties As far is as we are personally concerned this ends the controversy the misstatements in mr alstonsr Als tons comments in all fairness to us could not be ignored respectfully LAWRENCE C SNOW chestnut street philadelphia pa october 24 1927 |
