alville was awarded the me prize tor for tile the following interesting resume A FEW FACTS concerning COUNTY summit county is well blessed with the best of everything that may tie be ex petted and hoped lor for la in this altitude ranging gang in the valleys from feet at Il enefer to feet at kamas and parleys park the county Is noted lor for its 8 10 mountains the highest mountains t I 1 in a the state are in its boundaries and nd the weber river traverses the entire county pure water which Is so essential tor for culinary purposes abounds and many springs g r furnish water tor for towns ranches e tile the county contains favorable and legible feasible locations tor for dam sites tor for the storage of water to be used tor for purposes during the dry season th the e area of the county Is 1870 square miles biles or acres of which ire are privately owned grazing land and tillable land 87 per cent ot of the tillable land being under cultivation the th tillable area consists ol of the land along the weber river and its tributaries tributa ries the kamas valley and parleys park valle valley ley I 1 the tillable soil tor for the most part is a clay loam but in many places Is a sand loam varying from two to many feet in depth with no hard pan potatoes and beget vegetables hiss of tile the finest quality are grown therein therein and the land and climatic conditions are ideal for peas and sugar beets tile the quality of grain especially wheat and oats raised in summit county demands the highest price on the markets summit county has been known for many jears throughout the west lor for raising a high quality of beef mountain pastures are good tor for from five to six months of the year many pure breeds of the finest types are seen in sections of the valleys the valley along the weber river impresses the stranger within our gates as being a natural dairy country this enterprise ter prise especially in the kamas valley and around oakley has become the chief and a very valuable industry sheep thrive and are profitable in summit county in the early days etwas it noted for its large herds as the summer ranges are ideal many ot of the early tock flock masters continue in this thriving industry and in addition many small smal I 1 locks flecks are in evidence on the farms in I 1 the county the county is now being dotted with modem poultry houses the value of 1 poultry and poultry products now extend into the hundreds ol of thousands of dollars pe per r year T the raising of 0 hogs in this county has not developed into the magnitude of that ot of cattle and sheep nevertheless many farmers find it a profitable busl busi nest nes and am park city offers a good raar mar tet let for dressed pork transportation transportation Is ideal in summit county with tho the exception ot of the kamas kama valley which as yet Is not blessed with a railroad N no 0 doubt it will be in the near future as the wealthy large ore deposits ot of the park city district are being deve developed loped eastward and the fact that tile the fol toi mation matlon Is mineralized on both east and west side of the kamas valley gives a reasonable assurance that as the geological structure of park city district becomes more defined and with the assistance of modern equipment in the development and operation at greater depths the time is not tar far distant when a duplicate of the present wealth producers of park city district will be in ab abundant un dent evidence on both a sides ides ot of the ka kamas mas va val I 1 leyland extending tar far up into the mountains cast ol of the town of kamas the remaining portion ot of the county Is equipped with double track main line ol 01 the union pacific the best known transcontinental system in the country traversing the county from the wyoming s state late line along echo canyon to echo w where he r e it Inte resets tho the weber river following ng this stream in a general course to the morgan county line from echo a 9 branch line extends up the weber river to Wan wanshin wanship ship then following the sliver silver creek to park city and with an extension to keatley Kc atley it Is a dally daily sight to those living along this branch line to observe the movement ot of from twenty to forty railroad cars ot of high grade ore being transported to the smelters shelters sm elters located in the salt lake valley they contain from fifty to sixty tons each from grass creek junction and coal ville respectively spurs from this branch line railroad extend to the grass creek and weber mines thus affording transportation por tation of the coal the denver and rio grando grande enters the county with a branch line extending from salt lake city to park city this affords a double transportation facility from this wealthy mining district it also hauls dally daily from this district valuable ore to the smelters shelters sm elters PARK CITY ORE DISTRICT this district Is famous and world renowned tor for its production of silver lead and zinc it Is about twenty five live miles southeast of and feet above salt lake city its elevation being feet above sea level park city district ranks in these there days day of rapid growth of mining camps as an old camp the ground regarded as the most valuable lias has been thoroughly thoro ugly explored and the bonanzas have been mined from the chol choicest portions yet the developments on the deep levels ot of the silver king ontario judge mines and d the newly developed park utah give good assurance that enormous bodies of high grade as well as milling ore remain to be explored the estimated value of the ore taken from these mines during 1926 Is placed a at t twelve and one halt half million dollars yet it Is remarkable that the ore developed ve in these mines during the same period exceeds the production at the present time large interests are being c consolidated in 0 a way which permits operation on a large scale through a single plant evidently with the view ot of reducing costs and increasing production the opinion held by some persons that the bonanzas ground has been com worked out some years ago is not te lerl rifled fled by the production and values during the past recent years on the other hand the belief that park city district production and values are to continue for many years to come Is 33 substantiated u by geological geologic aj evidence when the first find was made in park city mill mining ing district is not certainly known but the discovery of the walker and webster claim to in 1869 by rutus rufus walker the subsequent under finder ol of ore in the s summer u of the same year by ephraim flan hanks k s are arc the earliest notices on record the first shipment ot of ore from this reelon elon called in tile the records parleys park is said to have been forty tons tor for the month of 0 july 1870 no mention is made ot of the mine producing it the famous ontario ledge which later developed into the ontario mine was discovered about june 15 1872 it Is very interesting at this stage to note and compare pro production of silver lead and zinc inc in the state fro to 1928 1926 inclusive clu sive chic which h are as follows tol lows silver silve r ounces lead pounds zinc pounds the amount ot of these same products produced in summit county from 1870 to 1920 1926 inclusive are as follows silver ounces lead pounds zinc pounds the valuation of this product during this period IT placed at thus we can readily see that the valuation of the products to date from park city district Is nearly a quarter of a billion dollars and yet geologists advise us that the district Is in its infancy so tar far as production Is concerned it Is interesting and worthy of note that up to and including 1926 the park city district produced the following percentages cen of the states total production silver 34 per cent lead 21 per cent zinc 34 per cent up to and including the year 1917 park city district in summit county had produced ounces of sliver silver a total value of 00 while the states total production was a s ounces ol of silver a total wa value 1 ue of thus summit county produces more silver than any other county in the state or 37 per cent of the total state production along the upper portion of the weber river many samples of valuable copper deposits have been found with some lead containing as high as five and six per cent copper also the indians during the early days when trading with the white man in the kam kaboos valley would bring small sacks of tree free gold with which they traded tor for r commodities it often occurred that when they did not have sufficient gold to purchase the ar tides they decided two or three of the warriors would leave on horseback up into the mountains east of kamas returning the second day with an additional supply of tree free gold thus assuring us that the location Is not tar far distant from the kamas valley its exact location the indians left for the modern prospector or geologist to locate for or themselves COAL coal deposits of summit county are located in the vicinity of Co coalville alville and referred to as the Coal vilIe district geo logically this coal Is located in the frontier formation of the cleatous Crea tous age this coal vein pitches irom from ten to nin ty y degrees averaging about twenty five degrees le grees the outcrop ol of the vein may be described as an inverted oblong platter extending attending in a northeasterly and southwesterly direction the extreme northeastern point being about is a mile and a halt half southeast of the town of grass creek and the extreme southwesterly portion being about a mile southwest of the he north summit high school building notwithstanding the fact that tile the coat coal Is the oldest deposit within the state it contains ns a high percentage of 0 moisture ranging from twelve to sixteen per cent which causes the coal to slack black down in air drying the coal contains practically ally no impurities thus producing no clinkers linkers and a minimum mount amounts of ash the same being a white fluffy ash resembling sem bling wood ash according to the united states geological reports the coal ville coal contains a smaller percentage of ash than that ot of any other coal in the he rocky mountain region the Co coalville alville coal Is especially desirable and efficient when used in the form of it powdered fuel and Is used extensively with this method in firing tn in the ement cement klins at devils slide it Is estimated by the united states geological engineers that within a radius ot of teet feet vertically ot of the surface there Is a recoverable supply ol of coal ia fix the Co coalville alville district alter after allowing the necessary amount tor for pillars tons and the amount ot of coal that has been extracted since 1859 when coal was cog first mined in this I 1 district Is near nearly v tons LOW temperature carbonization some seme experiments been made ma de tor for the utilization of the Co coalville alville coal and the development of methods method of extracting petroleum products though low ow temperature carbonization the coal is placed in a vat or cylinder and heated I 1 to a temperature of about degrees F for a period perlo dof of two hours during this time the volatile matter in the coal Is vaporizer vaporized and escapes through tubes provided far that purpose and are collected in a cooling vat when cooled to a certain temperature thus reverting into liquid faim tie the amount 0 of oil and creosote recovered vary from 20 to 40 gallons gallon per ton ot of raw coat coal taking an aa everage average everge ge of thirty two gallons per ton and placing a potential value of six cents a a gallon 0 bithe crude oil we have a potential vales of the extraction of this oil leaves the remaining coal a 06 high carbon low volatile smokeless fuel and there remains 1400 pounds of the fuel from every ton of raw coal if we place a potential value of four dollars lar per ton on this product it 11 lives gives us this added to the glies us a total potent lonal ional value of on the coal deposits of coal ville through low temperature carbonization process CLAY AT HENEFER clay deposits at jenefor hemeter are very valuable lor for the manufacture of press brick and we tile products the raw material having been shipped to salt lake city and provo extensive and detailed geological investigations should be made to determine the extent and quantity of these deposits as it is believed that they are extensive enough to justify the erect erection lon of a plant close to the clay deposits this would create an additional market for or our coal and an additional employment tor for our citizens the county contains large deposits of pine timber in the high mountains which are very valuable in the operation fich ot of the mines there are arc also large deposits cf timber which are ideal for the manufacture of 11 celsur or paper pulp 1 A survey made by government engineers disclose the tact fact that in one compact area there Is sufficient Quaking asp to produce ten tons t a of wood pulp per pec day dasil desirable e fo tor r the manufacture of paper and th this ts amount would be definite the area would produce that quantity tor for i a period ol of twenty years and the would be matured in bears cars thus mating making it continuous I 1 SAND within a radius ot of six miles ot of coal ville and two hundred yards ot of an op elating railroad there is 19 a bed ol of six feet thick ot of high gilleas sand sidrid which is very desirable tor for the manufacture ot of glass in the manufacture ot of glass it Is necessary 5 to have very high temperature head without the slightest evidence ot of smoke or dirt irom from this heat beat as otherwise the glass would not be clear in this respect it if in drilling tor for oil they encounter FL a gas field at the apex of the dome this sand I 1 would become valuable arid and probably develop into a very large industry the location from a standpoint idt of such an industry is good as ogden Js a the terminal tor for all railroads in the intermountain legion bullers EARTH within the bounds ot of thi the county are several deposits ot of fullers earth the veins varying in thickness from two to five feet fullers earth Is used extensively in the clearing ot of oil when refined ned and also in scouring wood the highest grade ot of pullers bullers earth is mined in florida and the same priced F 0 B salt lake city Is in excess ot of per ton this Is used sparingly inthe in the filtering ot of oil at th the e refinery however with modern modem improvements the I 1 method ot of refan ing oil may be so improved in the near future as to admit equality of fullers earth such as Is deposited in it this county to become valuable in this operation ONYX AND commencing at a point between the weber end and provo prove rivers it Is reported that there Is a bed of onyx six feet thick extending in a southern direction into duchesne county this formation in extending south changes into various colors of onyx and marble OIL the oil possibilities in and around Co coalville alville are so great that they are almost beyond the comprehension ot of any except the trained oil geologist and operator according to government report 80 per cent of all the vast oil production in the rocky mountain region comes from the lower portion ot of the frontier formation and the mowry shale directly beneath sometimes referred to locally as aspin formation both of these heavy oil pro ducting formations are within driling depth on well a structures truc tures in the vicinity of coalville Co alville a nd and the same general geological formations are continuous from Co coalville alville to all points in wyoming that have proved to be highly productive and |
