Show graphic story of red cross work A graphic account ot of how bow a red crow cross concentration camp in LOUI louisiana Stans sheltering refugees was whipped into fi shape hape in less than two weeks Is given by ernest P krick of san francisco on one pacific of the few persons sent from the pacific coast to the mississippi flood area mr krick was released from his duties as red cross field director at letterman general hospital Pre presidio sidia of san francisco to serve in the tha disaster A recent letter from him received through the local red cross chapter gives a vivid picture ol of the wort work being carried on at lafayette Lat ayette la during the early days the transportation t department had over three hundred trucks operating they were bringing refugees in at the rate of per hour you will realize what a a job it was to register and keep movin moving g that number of people that rate of registration kept us for two days at the present time we have registered over people white and black live stock Is harden harder to handle the than people to date we have handled over horses cows and mules hogs and 11 1 no 0 one knows how many chickens cows cowe horses 3 es and mules were registered with til tall tags and hogs by ear tap tags chickens have all been sold as we had no way of caring tor for them some hogs were sold the remaining number Is scattered in pens the cattle have been shipped to various points west for keeping in pastures when horses cows mules pigs and chickens pour in on oil you by we the thousands you will re realize saw that you have some job on your hands bends athe the getting back to the proper own ere era all this live stock will ia be a problem we have as yet not even begun to t try to solve tills this problem lem we wired towns west ot of hero here tor for mues mass tor cowboys tho towns responded wonderfully they came by ule the car carload when the morale went up arrived our first group 75 per cent as we knew that with trained would cattlemen the stock situation it has bus been we muen much relieved which b be e all cattle with a red bed a are e now branding it to be refugee cross so EO as to de designate cattle and thus prevent a lot ot or cattle rustling th the beeding feeding problem was a hard one you can realize the magnitude ot of the task when you start with nothing and d whip into shape means with which to feed people within a period of two weeks sandwiches and coffee were the main diet lor for several days we now have in operation 3 mess mesa halls each with it a capacity of it requires 4 hours to serve each meal the menu Is good housing in the beginning was biffl difficult due to the tact fact that we did not have sufficient to tide us over we had bad to construct barracks barrac to with housing cornea comes the job ot of water lines electric lines road sand drainage ine Is very flat so drainage has been a problem 1 two weeta weeks ago last sunday we had a terrific rain over 8 inches fell ell within I 1 18 8 hours time this rain practically ruined us as it flooded our entire white camp we had bad to move into town every single family and place them wherever we could we had to put them into stables lumber sheds warehouses and in tact fact any place that had a root on it As the result ot of this rain our camp was under 8 inches ot of water we drained the camp in less than two days so we then moved everyone back into camp feeding these people while they were scattered all over town was a job la in its I 1 iselt self the people here have responded rich nobly ly men as well as women have worked 38 36 hours at a stretch without a wink ot f ovo sleep I 1 have seen men with my own U eyes who had been working in the biter ter day atter after day without a change without sleep or rest they have cc acme na to the me medical cical department with blood oozing from their teet feet as the result ot of being in the water tor for days in the beginning our staff worked 18 or 24 hous housa a a day often with only one meal in 12 hours we are gradually getting back now to a normal schedule |
