Show delegate ate henry henmy welsh returns from convention wednesday of this wee week k mr bir henry welsh came up to park city tor for the first time since his return from the cleveland republican convention ven tion to a record man the gintle gentleman man talked very interestingly ot of the great political gathering wh whose a work he Is ully fully convinced will will result in it a sweeping victory for the republican party next november unfortunately mr welshs at 1 at the convention was curtailed considerably by illness while en an route rout a to the convention he sut suf alered an attack of erysipelas necessitating I 1 si him to be taken to a hose j pital at boone wisconsin where h he 9 was confined tor for tour four days he reached the convention hall however in time to cast his bov vo tor for calvin colidge tor for the next president of the united states and to participate in the selection of 0 a vice president and ot of course was proud ot of the privilege and is well satisfied with the selections made the gentleman talks very interestingly a es ot of his visit in cleveland the rapid progress the city has made in growth the past tew law years year and ot of the great auditorium where the convention was held the decorations the etc and the pleasure it afforded him higa in seeing utah so prominent in this great national convention in giving hla his impressions ot of the convention and its results mr welsh elsh says the G 0 P at cleveland Is now nov a matter of history and the wisdom or tolly folly ot of the labors ot of that convention are to be put to the only test that can now prove whether the work was wise or otherwise in so BO tar far as the personnel ot of the ticket Is concerned friends and enemies are it a unit Is declaring the candidates clean honest and able men hip platform covers nearly it if not all the ills 0 which the various blocs comp complain lalu ot of and while it may not tie be so emphatic as some of the blocs would like to have had bad jt it there to in still opportunity to emphasize the particular points now nov considered lacking sufficient edge when Fres president ident coolidge po uis ills letter of accept acceptance anc e it if that letter tails falls to stress the agricultural plank in a manner devoid of all ambiguity bob lafollette will have a good sized party following his leadership this too to the detriment ot of the G 0 P the farmer is desperate to the point of playing the part of a destroying agency for while he knows that voting outside of the G 0 P will only put the democratic party in power thereby working havoc and producing chaos to all industrial and financial interests he is like compson son willing to pull down the temple rather than permit matters to go on onas as they are the platform platform covers a great deal of ground but its style falls tar far below that of many of its predecessors it has one merit because of this I 1 s all of 0 the people can understand it the showing made by the account rendered of the G 0 P stewart ship is very creditable to the par tys business handling of the nations affairs that alone is insufficient to keep the blocs following the bartys leaders as the ahe d demand pertain not to the achievements ot of the past but rather make demands tor for future actions and these demands are such that no statesman has yet been sable to so state them in a manner that they stand sufficiently clear to enable the public to understand them nor asit Is it probable that at this time that any one can make such an understand understandable ible statement as many expedients may be necessary to attempt before the result producing expedient can be found as ag the results to be ba achieved must take in as its field the whole world merely a ratification the nomination of calvin coolidge was merely a ratification meeting but with the second man on the ticket no such a condition obtained and the best of the inside talent guessed wide of the mark so far as the utah delegation was concerned all were intent and busy I 1 in an eff ortto nominate gen hines but our efforts were unavailing the field as we had only one per cent of the power of the convention to wield this however did not dishearten us and we worked with a vim that under more favorable conditions would have produced more desirable results our I 1 governor had a very good nominal 1 ing ine speech written and committed and he was on the national commit I 1 j tees list to be recognized as he was I 1 in the proper order near the end or 01 the list ile he delivered his speech in very good voice and form was listened to very respectfully and accorded a generous measure of applause although several speakers ot of national repute had fallen before badre the bored delegates onslaught ot of derisive leers jeers and banter betor he mounted the platform our candidate ate tor or vice president received thirty tour four votes eleven ot of which were the do boje pe we had before the fi first rb t ballot said that we would poll a hundred but 33 per cent ot of claims Is a fair average tor for backers claims to realize how it happened it Is now easy to dope out why it happened so to begin with several ot of the old guard were somewhat conspicuous by their absence enthroned in their stead were several novices whose methods ot of manipulations were as outspoken as they were politically lacking in that fine touch tor for which the old guard and ad here rents were justly famous early in the vice president fight there was a persistent rumor that mr butler had beep been inspired to have judge kenyon tor for vice president b but IT t this suggestion did not seem to be favorably considered not because kenyon was not a splendid candidate but perhaps because some certain factors were a little restive ila in taking orders from the new oracle and concluded that the dele gates were competent to make their own selection when the time tor for vice president nominations came seven men all g good 0 ad con and true u e were tv e r e pl placed a ee d be before tor e the h e convention f 0 n a and u d i it t 0 one ne m may 3 r rely on the statements made by their advocates each was qualified to till fill any earthly position and the possessor of attributes worthy of a higher and better world while the speech making was in progress some quiet but efficient work was done tor for lo 10 lowden de a not with any hope of 0 Tio nominating minati 13 g him b but U t to p pave a ve t the h a way tor for another candidate but not tor for kenyon the gameway gamy was overplayed and lowden was waa named when it was well kanopa that lie he had bad declined and would stick to his bis guns as al 1 is id necessitating the nomination of some som one else the rhe J impression prevailed that some one else would be curtis of kansas but the gods ruled otherwise and gave us dawes instead some people seem to think that the general is somewhat given to profanity such opinion is erroneous ills his hell maria so often quoted is only a corruption of helen maria two names which are those of members of his family from gloa of the aftermath mutterings rings it seems that the old timers who on former occasions showed the elephant where to jump had it on their program to have congressman burton put in second place on the elephants back but like many another proposition the plot miscarried one reason tor for this was that general dawes recent easing up of conditions in germany had bad won tor for him a niche in the temple of 0 fame and the eyes of the unsophisticated delegates were still admiringly upon him this brought to him the nomination as he was consi considered dereA peculiarly fitted for any high position the platform A short resume of the platform shows that the desire of the convention was to declare in favor of curing all the ills that the various industries are heir to and it has been the practice ot df the G 0 P to live up to its promises that such Is its honest bonest and earnest desi renow sherela the rela no room tor for doubt so that when the republican victory ot of next november shall bew bewon ou we may expect a republican congress to attack the various problems necessary to give force to its cleveland platform for despite the declaration ot of one of the leading lights ot of the democratic party that platforms are made to get in on the 0 0 P has always with slight exception endeavored to redeem its platform promises prom isea the following short crisp sentences point out the trend of 0 the proposed pro gramme we pledge ourselves to the 04
