Show s 0 1 IQ fa 0 S SW W steil till out I 1 there has brenno change in a the file strike situation the past week the men are still out fully eighty per cent ot of them however much desat dissatisfied with conditions and anxious to resume worn work and the more radical element still holding out tor for the six hour day a minimum wage of and other extreme measures as formulated by the transitory 1 I W Ws W s when the strike was called aw nearly tour four weeks ago how long the strike will continue is problematical but certainly a long long time it the miners and mill men wait tor for the companies to accede t to 0 the original demands for it 11 is positive they will never do it 0 0 0 the first ot of the week a committee consisting of dave baxter A H addy and james duke representing the local miners union and endorsed by mayor fitzgerald and city council went to salt lake and conferred with the mine managements in an endeavor to bring about an amicable adjustment and tho the return to work ot of those who are anxious to do so the committee wre ware gladly received and conditions discussed and the committee respectfully but emphatically informed that no 0 recognition would be given the present demands of the strikers which they were positive was purely an 1 I W IV move as well as an unfair and unjustifiable demand the committee was further informed that it if the men would return to work nork and later a representative committee ot of the employed emp loyes of the different properties appointed to confer with the managements an audience would gladly be given them their grievances fairly and squarely considered and an honest effort made to effect an agreement as to wage and hours as would be satisfactory to all concerned but under no circumstances would any proposition t on of L I 1 W W origin be considered I 1 if f t the I 1 be properties involved were compelled to remain closed for years the committee it is understood are in favor of returns returning a g to work iiii nui i iain i is and an effort made to adjust matters tree free from outside influences or L I 1 W W agitators 0 00 0 Q wednesday of tills this week J H anderson a government representative was in our city and interviewed many of the strikers with a view of 0 affecting a settlement of the present difficult eis the present strike situation was minutely discussed with I 1 the conservative element every phase ot of the situation taken up his conclusion was that the only solution of the matter was tor for the men to get together and call the strike oft off to go back to bjork rk and thus rout the 1 malicious de designs agns gns 1 of me 1 I W W gelement le element lement which he positively asserted aed would never be recognized by the mining companies nor would they be allowed to do so by the federal government were they so inclined upon the return to work by the aln miners rs and mill fillmen men una ana a I 1 committee appointed from their number to wait upon tho the representatives representatives ot of the different companies he would luse use every possible means to bring about an all amicable understanding as ai to wages and hours etc and felt justified in giving his assurance that a satisfactory settlement would be reached he urged those he consulted with to advocate this plan among their fellow workers to tree free themselves absolutely from any I 1 W W en tangle tangIe ments in which they have unwittingly become involved and return to work in order to again agaibi set the wheels of the mining industry in motion and to effect a permanent settlement he suggested a meeting ot of the bona ade workingmen 0 of this district be called for next monday or tuesday night when he will again visit the city and do all in his power to end the strike that his edvice will be followed and that his prove successful is the sincere wish ot of th e lie reford record and fully 90 per cent of our citizens |
