Show THE ANT AND PAID advertising THU THE QUESTION of whether the united states government should engage in a policy of 0 paying for advertisements ti in the newspapers has been much agitated of late especially in regard to the selling of liberty loan bonds this being a strictly money matter the question comes up more squarely in concecion conne cion with it than with registration food conservation or other governmental matters given I 1 publicity secretary mcadoo 0 of the treasury has issued a statement dealing with this matter after referring to the great amount of advertising patriotically given to toi the ithe liberty loan bonds in the first fir at campaign by newspapers and other advertising agen 1 cles clea and by banks and other concerns 1 and by individuals the secre j tary contradicts the impression that the tha government to la the farat liberty man loan cam campagino campag tn asked for free advertising or paid tor for any advertising I 1 in tile the newspapers the groat great success of the 10 loan an be attributes ta es I 1 in n a ivery very great degree to the voluntary and patriotic work and advertising space patriotically given free roe to the government j while acknowledging the tremendous value of 0 advertising the secretary points out that the rel relation aaion bt 0 f the government to the press and to the public generally la is such that the question ot of paid advertising by it presents a problem very much more complex than it would be to a private enterprise the government cannot use the same thorough disi crimination as to the mediums it should use but would be obliged to ibe bs thoroughly democratic and impartial and tile the cost of such an undertaking der taking would be very great and would exceed the appropriation available under the existing law the secretary however states that the matter Is being very carefully considered but a decision cannot be arrived at until a better knowledge Is hadas had as to the cost of 0 the campaign and until the appropriation available for the purpose has been settled by congress |
