supt bupt REPORT the following was the superintend ants monthly report as submitted to the school board last tuesday evening unit and ill prove of interest to the many school patrons of our city gentlemen of the board As an of your school gilem and in compliance with your regulations I 1 beg to submit the rot fol lowing report for your consideration on friday sept 28 ION we closed the first month of tho the school work of the present year on the first day we were confronted with the difficulty of using two substitutes miss and mrs haing with drawn the former later resigned and the batters lat position was declared vacant these difficulties along with the gradation of the work tile the classification of new pupils tho the direction and management of a largo large corps or of teach e era r 8 nearly half of whom like myself were new and unfamiliar with the work here all these things have brought face to face with problems and difficulties understood only by those familiar with the abo work of a 6 director of public instruction however the work and results attained have been gratifying ina in a high degree though we have been compelled to leave undone many for the up building of the school which will bo be accomplished later we tire are hopeful and confident that we have before us a very ery prosperous year of work and that there will bo be progress in the various departments for this feeling wo we are indebted to the assistance of the school board and the loyal support of our teachers and supervisors for the most part our teachers aro are in command corn mand of tho the best beat methods of our time end and in possession of that reserve receive force found in all who tire fire al devoted to the work tile the fact that thai so BO many teachers were employed extremely lato some about the datlof date of the opening of the school find and some even after the opening has in a measure handicapped the work and rendered tho the general result of the school work less leas efficient and meritorious I 1 earnestly recommend that teachers teach erg be amplo employed y cd early in tho the spring at least by tho the close of the school year to effect this contracts may bo be dated ahead july and signed early as ai a means of holding teachers it Is a great thing to have a school system ho bo that all the schools operate as one school this la is the ideal which N bach I 1 hold the work of our primary supervisor and of principals our has contributed in a mot most helpful way to this end As superintendent it Is my endeavor to study with amI assiduity dulty and earnestness the educational needs of our schools to compete compare Us its features and depart departments meats with those of other and to bring our work to a very cry high degree of efficiency it Is our hope to bring about in this city a broader and deeper interest in the cause of education this ghisi I 1 feel confident will in due time be effected it la hi my earnest hope to bring parents into a i tal ital and close relation to the school I 1 am omitting no opportunity to urge parents to visit isalt the school and comment concerning the work I 1 behe a that the parent and the teacher must meet on a common grot ground ind and bear to each other a cordial feeling of helpfulness to enable the school to bring out the best that is in ill our boys and girls to this end teachers are urged to visit the homes especially the homes of the backward pupils the support we are arc receiving from the rank and file of the citizenship of the city Is gratifying indeed parent and school board are freely extending to us sincere sympathy hearty cooperation and unreserved support many have kindly assured mo lot that all possible pos bible help will be accorded mein me la my efforts to make this school a model one I 1 congratulate the board upon its ils advanced and pro groshe policy and note the unfailing support accorded the school the press also Is ran an important impatient factor in fix helping us THE RECORD ties has opened its columns to us and by it we will be enabled to br bring ing before tho the people from time to time the work needs progress as and statistics of the school I 1 believe the people should be kept fully informed of tile the progress of the school because they own arid and maintain it the high school is progressing nicely mr tanton la Is active and enthusiastic and has done much to create ran nn interest in that department his special report will appear in THE RECORD enrollment last year this month BO 80 this year 83 1 I am told by the principal and others that the interest among the students in their school work Is unusually unus ally good my own time during the month hoa has been taken up largely with a ith the work of organ bation 1 I hao ha 0 nd the
