| Show clr OR PETERSON TAKES OFFICE SEPTEMBER I 1 keynote of new administration of utah agricultural college la Is service to people V gep september 1 1916 dr E H Q peter ibon boa takes office as president of the utah agricultural college succeeding dr J A widtsoe soe who becomes president of 0 the university of 0 utah september ID 19 1916 the doors of 0 the col leze open for the seventh year of its existence these two facts make it important that the people of this state be furnished with a state stata ment meat of the aims and ideals ot of the great industrial school the utah agricultural ri college education today means that thai man men and women be educated to think and trained twined to do the people of utah damand that their sons and daughters receive during their school career an appreciation of the worth while things in life and they demand just as persistently that their sons and daughters receive a training that will en em able them to do the necessary work 0 of the world in a creditable manner when education combines these two ideals culture and training it Is a tremendous power for social advancement the utah agricultural college has haa combined these two ideals the work of the institution is so arranged that all ot of its students receive the cultural advancement so necessary to our present society at the same time they ther are being trained in their chosen field for a life of service historically the college was created in a time of national distress tile the E G peterson new head of utah agricultural college just following the civil war it was organized train ott i zeni zena therefore here fofe both stata find and fed eral provision for a broad and liberal training iu in agriculture agricultural engineering home economics commerce and business administration and in the natural and physical sciences the college can and does make of its students complete citizens as well as industrial or commercial experts problems of the farmer of the business man of the mechanic lc are its problems the training of women in the greatest of fields homebuilding la Is its duty the welfare of the entire rural community is its interest the field of industrial education to is vast in the rural community there are farmers to be trained and farm ers homes to be bb built roads over which the farm products may be carried must be maintained problems of rural ruml sai sanitation and water supply must be met and solved the social life of the farm presents special problems for the student of sociology aud and the marketing of farm products presents intricate problems for the agricultural economist Mec mechanics hanjes must be trained to study the needs of the fanner famer and create for him lavor say sav ing machines many young men and young women have not and do not care to take a high school education the colt college ego realizes the needs of these people and knows that could they avail thern them selves of the equipment and In instruction an institution such agthe as the college offers they would gladly do ao it for that reason all who are eighteen or over are welcome to take any courses at the utah agricultural college which they cau can pursue with profit |
