franklin avenue at sunday afternoon when A T day a negro coachman entered a lodging h house ouse and shot to ace voss the colored janitor of the atlas block the trouble which precipitated the rilling killing was brought on by an attack which day made upon an old negro named edwards the night previous edwards it seems had been accused by y day of gossiping about his hia private affairs and when the old man resented the accusations day struck him several blows with his fists A little later voss came along and having heard of the attack on edwards took day mildly to talc for what he considered a brutal and altogether unnecessary abuse of the old man day and voss voas quarreled over this matt matter e r and it Is stated that thre threats ats were uttered by both parties however 1 they street this identification wat was made by C A scott jhn redfield and john welch three men who worked with gardner at rocky ford colorado Cb lorado during the melon season gardner was employed at rocky ford by D V burrows barrows a melon grower he was crating melons there until last week the four men then quit work and came to this city they bought tickets to ordway colorado a short distance east of pueblo and from there came direct to tais city gardner scott and welch arrived last wednesday and redfield on friday they rented room 34 at the american house on commercial street and all tour four lived there gardner gardnor was comparatively a stranger to 10 these theae three boys having been known to them loss less than two weeks he was working at the burrows farm when the other throe
