Show I By BERT BOYACK This Week THOMAS K Principal Bountiful ful Junior High School Build a mental attitude and you build a man or woman so stated Principal l I have always found It refreshing to be with young people Their thinking Is basically solid and their expressions of ideas are most Interesting I became an educator to be able to Involve myself In the thinking and feelings feelings feel feel- ings of young people CONTINUING he said When I hear people misguided young people are today first I think that people said the same of our generation and then I think quietly to myself that It ItIs itis Is we the parents who have misguided them I have an opportunity opportunity op- op to register U the e greatest greatest great great- est gain possible during the ti time me meI I have the opportunity to work with a student To have a boy or girl that has worked so hard to become a dropout come back later and say I will be graduating from high school this year is most gratifying It can only be surpassed surpassed sur- sur passed by the excellent achievement achievement achieve achieve- ment of a student who has accomplished accomplished ac- ac something special through personal effort DIR l l IOTT is a native of Scipio Millard County and received his early schooling In that community lIe He was of N Nephi High and then continued continued con con- his education at Snow College He received his bachelor bachelor bach bach- elor of scIence degree from BYU and has since done graduate graduate grad grad- work at the University of utah Utah State University and the University of Oregon at Eugene Eugene Eu- Eu gene Ore After being graduated from BYU Mr started his teaching career humbly In a aone aone one room log cabin at Black BlackHorse BlackHorse Horse White Pine County Nev a school that no longer exists UPON COMPLETION of this first served as an missionary In Returning from his mission he found school had started in most districts but secured a position in Boulder Garfield County He continued teaching at Boulder for seven years then one year In Escalante before movIng to Oak City Millard County where he served as teaching principal for four years 1942 found Principal Mem- Mem mott In Davis County searching for employment at the Ogden Arsenal and Hill a car car- penter That fall he was employed employed em- em by Davis County schools as an Industrial arts Instructor at South Davis Junior High School now Bountiful Junior High School THERE HE taught with J. J A. A Taylor and Stanley Pitt the only former principals of the school He taught Industrial arts for 13 years and then was appointed appointed ap- ap pointed as counselor He continued continued con con- as counselor for three years before being made assistant assistant assist assist- ant principal a position he held for eight years before being made principal last February It has been a real pleasure to be associated with the school for the past 24 years he said ACTIVE IN the professional side of education P Principal l' l In c i pa 1 l has served as president president dent of the Davis Edu for two years He has also been a delegate to the Utah I Education Association House of Delegates for five years ears I lle He was a delegate to the Nai National Na- Na i Education Assoc Association i at ion ionI I from Davis County Mr MemI Mem- Mem matt mott was president of 01 the local I j T T. T K MEMMOn Presidents Presidents' Association a t Ion ot of He has served on committees committees com com- to develop a curriculum guide for Davis County as well as on the committee to develop student personnel programs for Davis County schools SINCE PRINCIPAL came to Davis County he has seen education grow to become big business in the county When he started teaching there was one high school and two junior high schools Now there are five high schools and seven junior high schools with another due to open next fall We Ve are still crowded in some of our schools he remarked but we are more nearl nearly providing providing pro pro- viding a complete educational opportunity for the students of Davis County than any time prior The school board buard the teachers and the parents can be proud of the fine effort being made in the district but one relaxed relaxed re- re moment of content and we will be far behind again IN CONCLUSION Principal left leftus us the followIng following follow follow- Ing thoughts In regards to parent parent par par- ent and school children Parents let your son or daughter know that you care You must sincerely care about what is important to them Try to remember how Important it was to you Prove your sincerity by giving them a chance to develop develop de- de realistic patterns for liv- liv ing MAY l Y I suggest three things that could help first a vision ot of the future with patience to see It develop logically second an advancement program m with some direction and third an aggressive self confidence with self discipline to promote ma- ma The young people are won won- I They will serve in a wonderful time of the world Let us as par parents e n t s and the t f schools see that they have every opportunity to achieve maximum maxi maxi- I mum maturity while we can be beI bean an Influence their I future and our happiness |
