FIELDS POLICE KEPT PEOPLE FROM ENTERING THE PLACE manager had failed to obey the orders of the building commissioner chicago july 9 the retail dry goods store of marshall field company was closed to the public today by building commissioner bartzen be cause the of fhe store had not complied certain regulations to which its attention had been called by the coro m or ier for several nays the management and the commissioner have been in correspondence regarding the placing of red lights in the store for the pur J marking exits and stairways this morning the commissioner when he became aware that the work had not been done over sunday caused police officers to be stationed at all the doors of the place and allowed nobody but employed emp loyes to enter major as soon as he was aware that all the customers were being turned back at the entrances hast to the building commissioner 1 I have repeatedly called attention to this matter said the commissioner and it you are not man enough to protect the lives of your patrons you ought to be in jail mr sammons then called upon the mayor who said that the building commissioner had been too drastic and that he should have proceeded against the management of the store through the courts the store was allowed to open and commissioner bartzen declared that he would take out warrants for its managers
