Show electrification OF A RAILWAY I 1 the sarnia tunnel of the ill st clair tunnel company passes under the st clair river and connects the division of tho grand trunk railway system which terminate at port huron mich and sarina ontario the tunnel proper is 60 2 feet long and from terminal to terminal a distance ul stance of feet will bo be electrically equipped equi at the present time passenger and freight trains arriving brorn either direction are hauled through the tunnel by steam locomotives almost all of tho the freight trains must be divided on arrival as they are too heavy for a single locomotive to handle on the grade at the tunnel approaches the result has been that traffic kraffl is congested at the terminals and the entire service of the system imp imparted it is expected that the electric dicomo tives will greatly relieve this congestion as their greater capacity and flexibility will eliminate or largely reduce tho the necessity of dividing trains the equipment includes a complete power system feeder and distributing sY system stern bonding light and power distributing systems roundhouse montois fator driven pumps drainage and sewer systems system for buildings building sand and yards and electric locomotives the power punt plant will aill include in its equipment two 1250 ky volt three phase 25 cycle 1500 r I 1 p m rotating field westinghouse steam turbine units with the necessary corn clement of switch boards excite rs lightning prot protective active apparatus etc this station static will abw supply current to light the buildings yards and tunnel tie to operate motor driven centrifugal and triplex pumps which drain the tunnel and approaches and operate tho the sewerage systems to run motors in the roundhouses round houses and for other pur pill poses A grooved overhead ti trolley wire will bo be used suspended from a single five inch high strength double daubl galvanized steel stranded messenger cable by hangers of varying length in such a manner that tho trolley wire will be approximately horizontal there will also be a small section of track equipped with a trolley line swung by suspension am bracket arms which tire are supported on latticework lattice work poles the motive power proper is provided for in the contract by six fix single phase electric locomotives similar in design each will weigh approximately sixty two tons and will develop a pull of pounds on a 2 percent grade at a speed of ten miles mile per hour railway and engineering review |
