Show SOUTHERN PACIFIC WRECK train narrowly missed going into a river redding cal feb I 1 13 3 southern pacific passenger train no 15 southbound had a narrow escape from wreck and loss of lives at 3 this morning a mile south of shasta springs the train was eight hours late on account of a freight wreck it at coles and had two engines engineer van victor of the head engine saw a boulder sliding down the mountain side and turned on brakes but not in time to prevent a collision both engines were hurled burled from the track the head engine turning over against the embankment fortunately tho the engines fell to the right of the track as to the left is a sheer drop down to 0 o the river yan van victors knee was sprained and he sustained several cuts but no one elso else was hurt two tramps riding between the engines escaped the passengers were awakened by the shock and badly frightened the track iams isms torn up for a hundred feet A wrecking crew is clearing the track and traffic may bb oe resumed this afternoon |
