the club dining rooms and after the collation while enjoying the cigars both guests and hosts responded to toasts proposed by president cake the introductory remarks of president cake were well chosen and at once established a feeling of friends ehla between the members of the corn mission and the citizens of portland he spoke of the coming exposition aa a display of the products of the whole pacific coast and made a point of the fact that utah was considered a part of that vast territory and on behalf of the people of oregon extended a welcome to people when they hould visit the fair governor cutler was the first speak r to reply to the invitation and wel me or president cake he saad in part when J visited the site of abo lewis and clark exposition two years ago I 1 thought it was the best location for a fair that I 1 had ever been and I 1 looked forward to another visit with a picture in my minds eye of the buildings that were to be erected and the grounds all laid out in beautiful walks and terrace but I 1 must admit that the picture I 1 drew in my mind did no t halt credit what I 1 have seen today I 1 did not realize what splendid spot you have for the exposition I 1 feel very grateful to the management of the exposition for the selection of the site for the utah building and I 1 want to say that I 1 do not think that a better one could have been found within tho grounds your exposition will compare favorably with that of any in the history of such affairs and I 1 want to express my approval of the whole proposition I 1 havo always thought thai utah could make a display of its products that would cause the hoopla of other states to open their eyes but I 1 roust eay that the forestry building as it now blands Is a marvel that will attract the attention of every visitor with its giant pillars of logs and monster sticks of timber that form its walls I 1 am much interested in the timber industry I 1 hayo been a stockholder in the oregon lumber company for some almo and I 1 want to say that it the other enterprises you have in this state pay dividends as regularly as that does tho secret of ore gons success Is easily explained welcome utah delegation secretary tom richardson was most enthusiastic in his address ot welcome to the commissioners from utah ho has been associated with governor cutler in several enterprises for the up building of the country and la well acquainted with most of iho other members of the commission ilia remarks acro timely and best expressed the feeling of that existed at the banquet table the of oregon was the toast that 13 A worthington licad of the southern pacific lines in oregon and the oregon railroad and navigation company was asked to respond to mr hag been a resident of portland but a few months and as though the weather man was attempting to assist him a speech upon that subject the bun immediately sought refuge behind a friendly cloud nhep the lall road man ariae to respond the sun was at its boat during tho reception and the luncheon but when sir worthington commenced to toll of having brought ills family to portland two weeks ago and that they had not had a glimpse of the sun ince they came that planet tried to bear out his assertions he spoke of the great resources of the state and abo offered settlers within the states and predicted that people would some day find a home here he aalde that the of the northwest bad more allea of railroad per capita than any other section of the united states and added that the percentage av on id be in creased rapidly from flow on B B calvin the predecessor of mr who la now located in san francisco was present and goolt advantage of an opportunity to say that ho was taking a great interest in the exposition to make it popular the service at the luncheon waa under tho direct supervision of steward fraud A dark who hag recently come to abo commercial glob from st bouis this was hid effort at a public function in portland and that ho was la the consensus ot opinion of ahw that attended j abc luncheon utah building following the luncheon the governor and other members of the utah commission visited the offices of ion lewis tho architect for tho purpose of arranging or plans tor the utah building they were busy the cst of tho aUer noon with lucli details and returned to tho hotel portland very tired but with a feeling of t alls ot having fully decided upon the plans of the building and tho details of construction in an Inter new last night governor cutler explained that the utah exhibit would he housed within a building feet by ca feet and that an annex would be constructed in the rear in which the mammoth concentrator would be placed the principal feature of the states display will be the mining exhibit although the agricultural resources and and educational display will occupy prominent places governor cutler left portland last night for california but ino other members of the commission will re main another day or two before tho governor departed he expressed in enthusiastic thusia terms his appreciation of the manner in which his party had been entertained by the commercial club and the officials of tho exposition he said in all my experience in public alto I 1 have never been treated better nor found such evident sincerity of purpose among neighbors of another bbate utah will show its appreciation of the treatment accorded its commission when tha exposition opens by sending a great crowd of visitors and a splendid of its products |
