MANIA ENDED one ot the beat signs ot aba limes Is tho complete subsidence of the consolidation soli dation or trust craze which raach cd its climax in 1901 says henry clews the new york financier he continues comment by saying that in the year just closed it Is estimated that the total industrial consolidations aggregated only about as against in 1903 in 1902 and in 1901 the causes of this cessation were twofold first bankers profited by their experience and refused to finance further schemes of this class and second owners of industrial plants discovered that the trust systems do not always work as well as anticipated and that as a rule they were absolute failures in the maintenance ot monopolies overcapitalization and heavy fixed charges based upon expected monopoly profits proved the strongest possible inducement to the starting of new competitive concerns having small capitalization small fixed obligations new mt chinery fresh brains and new methods the present generation is hardly likely to see a repetition 0 the trust mania on its former scale combinations bi will continue but on sounder and more politic lines monopolies we may still hae ot which ara inevitable but the promoters dream of turning all the vast industrial machinery of the united states ined a lew ponderous combinations has happily broken down through its own inherent rottenness and weakness the organization ol 01 labor was the inevitable counterpart of the 0 capital reckless and radical leadership led labor into much the same sort of errors that brought some ot our captains of industry to an early day of reckoning labor too sought monopoly and this object was frequently obtained by force and intimidation when other tailed general prosperity enabled many employers to make concessions which served to encourage rather than satiety the demands ot unreasonable leaders un ul the right ot freedom of contract between employer and employed emp loye was threatened with extinction thus came the issue between ahe open and closed shop and time is likely to prove that there is but one end to a monopoly whether ol 01 capital or labor that is failure for eone months thea has been on abatement of labor troubles and their revival on a serious scalo cannot be reasonably expected until the wave of depression sets in which it is to be hoped wll be more wisely accepted than the conditions of the last two years NO LENIENCY FOR DISHO OFFICIALS the prompt and decisive course which is being pursued by the government officials in the investigation of tha oregon land fraud cases indicates that it Is not the purpose to allow any guilty to escape without the deserve punishment just now the officials have unearthed evidence which tends to show that prominent men in official life succumbed to the temptation offered by the schemers alio bought to attain wealth by tho devious methods which inevitably lead lo 10 ruin and disgrace but there has been no hesitancy on the part of the officials to whom haa been entrusted the investigation of the frauds and the prosecution of the of fenders they no doubt realize that there is a man at the head of this government who will countenance not even a suspicion of wrongdoing wrong doing a man who is carefully and zealously safeguarding the interests of all the people irrespective 0 political affiliation if anything a more rigorous examination into the official acts of a man is prosecuted it tho object ot the investigation has presumed upon party ties to save himself from the possible consequences of his acts even political opponents have come to recognize this phase ot Roosevel ts character and they respect him for it only blinded radicals question his motives and in a manner so obviously unreasonable as to make them the objects of ridicule and by BO doing they that they are at tainted by the same spirit which 13 inherent in those who are guilty of betraying a trust for a bribe or who will offer a bribe for the betrayal of the people in order that their personal interests may be advanced assuredly the dishonest officeholder office holder can hope for no leniency under the roosevelt administration there aio lamentable circumstances circum connected with the senator john and congressman binger hermann in connection with these frauds senator mitchell haa brea prominent in the political history of oregon since he first went to that state in 1860 he has been honored by the republicans of that state by election to state offices they have times endorsed him for the united states senate when political conditions were such that bis election was precluded and they have elected him to a seat in that august legislative body until now h baa possessed tho confidence and legard of the of bla adopted state and is no doubt that he has been identified with the building up and development 0 oregon up has reached ano acore aej ten years allotted to man and now in his old age on the verge 0 the grave with a record ot bleming success in life behind him that record ia to be blotted with the disgraceful story of tho betrayal of his constituents and alio breaking of his solemn oath of office the shadow of the charge will forever hang darkly over his memory his bite story with lla successes achievements and honors ending in tho disgrace that has now come upon him cannot but bo a lesson to the generations now preparing to take part in public life true success and greatness can only be attained and maintained through absolute honesty of purpose and methods tho stories of dietrich ot burlon and of matchell Ml show that even the men who aspire and obtain a beat in the highest legislative body in the world are not impervious to the petty temptations which assail mankind it Is evidence that some of tho members of that body may take unto themselves before too quickly censuring other members or people of certain states that admonition let he who is without sin cast the first stone EXPORTS FOR CALENDAR BAR exports of manufactures in the calendar ear 1904 will probably exceed in value details of eleven months exports just completed by the department of commerce and labor through its bureau ot statistics show of tho eleven months of the present year a total of of manufactures exported and for alie month of november alone so that unless the december exports should prove much leas than those of november the total exports of manufactures for the calendar year must exceed million dollars in the calendar year 1903 the exports of manufactures were but millions in 1900 in which year the highest export record in manufactures occurred tho total tor the calendar year was millions in 1898 millions in 1896 millions and in 1894 millions thus the exports of manufactures in 1904 seem likely to be nearly three times as great as those in 1904 the in creasa in the exportation of manufactures has been sufficient to nearly oft set the phenomenal reduction in ex ports of agricultural products As Is well known the shortage in our own wheat supply coupled with the unusual demand in the home market and tho unusually large surplus in other countries from which our former customers were able to draw freely have caused the exports ot breadstuffs bread stuffs from the united biatek and especially those of wheat and flour to tall oft greatly in the last year so thai agrical tural products which in the eleven months ending with november 1903 amounted to million dollars in value were but millions in the corresponding months of 1904 a tall of 85 millions while manufactures show an increase ot 77 millions the figures tor tle eleven months of 1903 having been millions and in eleven months of 1904 millions in addition to this products ot the mines show an increase of about 3 millions products of the forests 3 millions and products of the fisheri s 1 millon dollars while alio miscellaneous group shows a decrease ot about 1 million dollars and foreign merchandise exported a decrease of nearly millions bringing the total exports for the eleven months of 1901 up to against in the months of 1903 DARROW ON RIGHT TO WORK speaking of tho sacred light to work clarence darrow the chicago labor attorney says a working man has no greater to work with whom he pleases than ho has to play with whom he pleases that the other party concerned has as much right to say whether they wish his company for work or play or society as the man himself and that if the association ot his fellows in work on society is of sufficient importance to his happiness he must conduct himself so that his fellows will associate with him he says this la the law of life |
