that wholesale combino with the democracy seems to be the fly in the cearna ointment young corbett is matched with battling nelson aad as a result war news and campaign gossip will be relegated to the rear for awhile those who are really interested in savins th country from the deani alon bow bows will register tonight and voto the straight republican ticket on nov 8 apostal dowie announces that he will soon begin to remit sins there are people who would be more pleased it the old fellow would remit the money that he managed to wheedle out of them american Amei ican party orators are continually calling attention to the rainbow which they conjure up because 0 the pot of gold they have knowledge of and because of the old superstition that a pot of gold is at the end of every rainbow the washington star is perfectly right in intimating that all the predty girls have gone republican when it says better cut ready made clothing and better and hats are go ingon the shelves of the country stores rural maidens read the fashion notes and the aids to beauty and the girls with a homemade home made look are becoming scarcer only three weeks more of this innocuous desuetude until the presidential election says the salt lake telegram the attention of its editorial writer is called to the tact that there will also be election and county elections in utah and the kearns party and trio of salt lake newspapers will be continued in that innocuous desuetude by the verdict of the people POWERS AS A TRAGEDIAN the only orlando seeing inevitable defeat staring him in th face and thinking probably that our weber county political mountebank was claiming too much attention or may be thinking that the political farce now being enacted by the DEMO UN FARCE COMPANY LIMITED would support two stars on its boards has addressed what be Is pleased to call an open letter to congressman howell in which be complains of the campaign now being made against him by those whom ho terms the managers of the republican party in utah we have found heretofore many things to in judge powers we have recognized his great ability as a jury lawyer and have listened to him with pleasure while he recited his well woven fables on bis pet theme of democracy but this latest break of his Is pitiable and would lead bis best friends to question seriously not only hia good faith in the matter but cheu his sanity judge powers numbers his grievances like an old time dl alne up to ninthly and then proceeds to dilate upon them until he almost eclipses his ogden rival in lurid rhetoric and skyrocket eloquence thereal grievance of the judge how over Is found in the fact that some supporters of mr insist that be is in sympathy with abo un ameri can party that he has a perfect understanding der with cannon kearns et al and that jio desires to see reed unseated that his testimony before the smoot committee was a studied effort etc let us eee it there Is not some good grounds for believing that the judge Is not so virtuous as his elgh sel would indicate it powers la not in sympathy pathy with the un anglican movement why in all candor and fairness did he not say w to the people of utah here la a movement that challenges alo good faith of the great mass of the people of this state a movement that bays in effect that a basl majority of the voters of utah are slaves fo an ecclesiastical hierarchy a movement which had as its godfather god father at the hour of its christening a man who has advocated the wholesale ment ot the mormon people the republican papers denounced it the republican state central committee denounced it tho republican campaign speakers upon the samp have denounced it as un amerlean as a step backward all republican candidates for state offices have gone on record as against it in the meantime how did the democratic party managers receive it the herald the official organ ot the democratic party cannot or does not conceal its joy over the unfolding of the plot it freely advertises all its meetings eulogizes its orators and adherents he rents and can hardly be distinguished from the tribune in the virulence with which it attacks all opponents of this un amerlean movement chairman bamberger has never yet found to officially protest against the movement but has cuddled up to the prime movers as though they were his allies and friends there Is no democrat so far as we have heard who has been upon the stump tor his party whose utterances have not been quoted with approval by the un amerlean tribune even judge king and moses thatcher have received warm from that paper which is even now under pretense of quarreling with the judge throwing bouquets at him tor bis attitude in tho meantime bow does judge powers himself stand upon this movement has he ever denounced it does not consider un americans Amerl cans as his younger brethren why judge powers why should the people not conclude that you favor this movement dont rant but tell us WHY it is quite possible but hardly probable that the so called protestants la the reed smoot case should have stumbled upon the judge as one of their star witnesses dental shot it is said killed the devil but we hardly believe from the cleverness with which mr taylor chief counsel for the protestants in the smoot case handled his side of that controversy and from the activity of salt lake adders of the movement that judge powers was either an unwilling witness or that hla testimony in any manner surprised the protestants the judges attitude nd bearing before that committee was such that while he may have meant all right and while those who know his itching tor notoriety may have understood that he was actuated solely by vanity yet we think he laid himself open to the charge of making a studied effort before the committee As to the charge that reed smoot should be unseated wedo not see why the judge should get so furious we have heard hundreds of good democrats cormons mormons as well as gentiles express the hope that the junior senator should be fired if the judge is better thac i his party he should at leas delosd his position we wonder why the judge addresses himself to mr howell mr H probably has troubles of his own just now and it would have been more appropriate for judge powers and far better politics to have told his troubles to a policeman judge powars takes himself too seriously he overacts over acts he is a bom bastes furioso Fur loso he sw aggers like bes sus he Is belligerent as sir luclus he makes himself a common laughing stock he out cannons cannon in cannons own peculiar field he needs a chunk of ice on his head and a mustard plaster on his feet he has the heroics when he should have just common sense he poses as a knight hurling bis with all the claptrap ot chivalry when he is in reality a foolish old woman with sunbonnet and broom he aims at high tragedy while be Is in fact enacting a role in low comedy THE COUNTY TICKET we do not believe that the darned by the late county convention can bo defeated at this election the nominees are all clean capable men who aro identified with and keenly alive to the interests of the
