skilled men to remain at the rate paid before the strike the packers who have often declared they would not meet the labor men will undoubtedly deny today that a conference has been held but the tact remains that duly authorized representatives of the owners of the packing plants did meet the labor men what doubt existed as to the position af the switchmen in the strike has by grand master frank of the organization hawley at a meeting of the union said the men would remain at work the first serious break in the stock yards strike in chicago came last night cheif fifty striking livestock outcome of 1904 strikes in new york is decided step in that direction new york sept 5 labor day 1904 presents many interesting facts and conditions both to employers and employed emp loyes in new york city as compared with the same period a year ago says tho herald within the five months between april 1 and september 1 this year losses in to workingmen in new york city from and lockouts have been more than one third less than during tho same months last year and losses to employers have been correspondingly spon smaller in all of the 1904 strikes except possibly in the building trades tho outcome has marked a decided step towards the open agop and in several instances the employers have achieved a decided victory the striking union meri having returned to work side by side with nonunion non union employed emp loyes this was especially noted in the strikes of the marine machinists the tailors and the butchers in 1903 the building trades strike waa the most stubborn and disastrous ever known in that branch of industry in new york city during the season 31 unions of skilled mechanics comprising men were idle mosi of the time involving a loss of days work and in wages the loss to builders and members ag 1 gre gated more than in addition to this last year than laborers were idle much ot the time including unskilled workmen in the subway teamsters masons helpers and other this year at no timo have there been igwe than men in the building trades idle at any time and here auvo been strikes ot consequence ial 4 f among the unskilled classes in march and april masons helpers quit work which forced an equal number ot bricklayers brick layers into idleness for twenty days this was the only trouble ot importance in the building trades until the recent lockout and this fight has been ot a sporadic character which has not brought about a complete tie up of building operations such as occurred in 1903 in the building trades at the present time there are only about men in enforced idleness there are union workmen skilled and unskilled in the metropolitan district at no time during the season has the army ot idle exceeded |
