Show RUSSIAN NAVAL OFFICER SAYS WIRELESS telegraphy IS GREATEST LESSON LEARNED believes every vessel will be equipped in the near future with the new means of communication sept 2 captain catouse Ma the late admiral of staff who arrived here wounded on the russian battleship august 12 la an interview today with a correspondent on the naval lessons of tb war said 1 I do not believe the operations ot either navy have demonstrated anything which will materially change natal warfare the general lesson has been the usefulness of wireless telegraphy in the fighting of august 10 we used tho wireless system in signalling sign alling until the apparatus was shot away we found U worked more reliably and quieter than flags I 1 believe that in the near future every ship in all the navies even gunboats gun boats will be tilted with wireless apparatus much has been learned about mines and torpedoes the only defense against mines Is good judgement jud gement oj insight aa to where they are likely tobe placed by the enemy it it Is imperative pera tive that ships must go to that vicinity send sweepers in advance the war has demonstrated that the most powerful searchlights cannot pick up floating mines which were un known before this war the japanese made as many as fifteen ineffectual torpedo attacks in one night torpedo nets are of very little use when a ship Is in action they cannot be used successfully as they retard her speed and hamper bet movements it several ships are together and they concentrate cen their searchlights it is almost impossible to successfully attack them with torpedoes I 1 do not agree with the critics who say the battleship Is a thing of the past in the port arthur movements the battleships tle ships cruisers and torpedo boats did the work cut out for them sanco I 1 havo been at Tal I 1 have had an opportunity tp read tho japanese reports ot the port arthur engagements and I 1 find them inaccurate the russians have done much damage to tho japanese boats which has not been reported by either side captain Is still in tho but ie improving |
