Show A GREAT FLORAL CLOCK t makes the passing hours at 81 louis exposition times fleeting hours are ticked off at the worlds fair at st louis on a wonderful chronometer this la the floral clock which lies on the slope of the hill in front of the main entrance in thenor tb facade of the palace of agriculture the floral clock has a huge dial all of brightly blooming marking off the numerals and minute spaces 1 the dial is feet in diameter and the minute hand fifty feet in length the numerals marking the hours are all picked out in bright colored coleus a foliage plant ot dense growth which Is kept symmetrical by pruning without danger of im paring its growth flowers of variegated hue cover the entire face of the clock and to insure a perennial bloom the plants are changed frequently collections ot twelve distinct plants fill the circle surrounding the numerals each collection being twenty five feet long and fifteen wide the hands of the lock are of steel troughs in which plants are growing A thousand incandescent Inca descent electric lights illuminate the clock at night the white light bringing out the brilliant hues of the flowers and foliage as vividly by night as by day the machinery of the clock Is housed in an ornamental pa at the summit of the hill Is glass the movements of the works being visible to visitors the hours and quarters hours are struck by a great brass bell in the pa which may be heard through out the greater part of the fair grounds in the pavil llon la also a large hourglass of the time ot our grandfathers the evolution of the process of ticking off line being thus showing contrast with the most modern method of keep ing account of the passing of the hours |
