Show mw STILL limpin PRISONERS SENT UP FROM OG DEN HAVE influential RELATIVES an uncle of one of the men writes district attorney halverson IM As stated in the standard several days ago an effort Is being made by the english relatives of robert lister and william watson who are serving five years in the utah penitentiary up on the charge of highway robbery to secure their release numerous letters have been received by different officials in utah upon the mens behalf both judge and district attorney halverson have received letters from listers brother which are similar the letter to the district attorney Is as follows J T lister complete house furnisher upholsterer ironmonger etc derwent furnishing house working ton january 12 1904 mr halverson district court dear sir I 1 have been given your name by a brother of mine who now lies in sugar house station under the charge of highway robbery along with another man named watson well sir my brother says that they had not a fair trial and it I 1 had to write to you you might use your good offices to have the matter put to right I 1 may mention that they both have wives and families here who are depending on their relatives for support and it you could possibly do anything for them it would be a godsend god send they are both considered very respectable men here apa never had any serious matter laid against them I 1 am a free mason and T understand you arc also of the same craft it you could give me any deballa in connection with the charges or any report thereon it would be useful and gladly received by their friends thanking you in anticipation I 1 remain yours fraternally J T LISTER this case of these two men Is attracting tr on the part of the british government attorney A B irvane of salt lake city has been secured by the relatives of the two men and it lias been stated that he Is now in correspondence with the british foreign office the embassy at washington their application tor a pardon will be up before the board of pardons on february the information in the case against the men which was tried in the district court here june ath last charged the said watson and lister with robbing one robert looming on march ath 1903 of they were tried and found guilty and sentenced to five years each in the state prison from some of the testimony in he case it seems that the three men had planned to goback to england and work some kind of a game of swindle they came to ogden about march ath and going to beat their way out of town on a freight train but as no trains were going out that evening until late they started to walk out of town when near twenty eighth street and pacific avenue watson and lister told leeming who was troubled with bis eyesight that some hobles hoboes were after them and started to run after running about a block one of the two bumped into leeming and upset him and in the confusion the old man was touched for his roll he reported the matter to the police and the arrest of the two men followed |
