Show BILLS PASS THE SENATE SIX MEASURES MEET THE APPROVAL OF THE UPPER HOUSE washington feb 8 after listening to speeches by mr and mr clay in support of the panama canal treaty the senate today passed the bill granting assistance to the proposed lewis and clarke exposition at portland ore the ull 19 amended so as to close the exposition on sundays and the provision for a permanent memorial to lewis and clarke was eliminated he eulogized mr roosevelt as ons of the ablest presidents the country has over had mr clay followed announcing hia intention to vote tor the canal treaty but at the same time sharply critics ing the conduct of the american government in dealing with the situation in panama he announced conviction that there had been a flagrant violation of international laws but said that in the face of the presidents disclaimer he could not bring bl to believe the united states had promoted the tecc salon of panama on the showing made by th diplomatic correspondence he would have been compelled to cast his vote against tho treaty but the presidents explanation coupled with his great desire to have a canal built and the deep concern felt throughout the south tor the consummation of that enterprise had overcome his objections the senate passed tho following bills fixing the status of chaplains in the army amending the revised statutes to as to permit vessels of less than thirty tons to bring merchandise into the united states from mexico and canada authorizing courts martial at remote naval stations setting apart a tract of land at central city col to be used as a cemetery for the odd fellows providing for the of lands in northwestern colorado when the bill appropriating 2000 for the lewis and clarice exposition at portland ore was reached mr I 1 gallanger suggested that the bill go over why asked mr birtchell BIl you may as well let U pass now as at any time air gallanger withdrew his object alon mr bailey entered a objection to the passage ot the bill but did not press it mr platt of connecticut offered an amendment prohibiting the opening of the exposition on sunday and it was agreed to 25 to 17 on motion of mr matchell Ml th sixteenth section of the bill appropriating for the building ot a permanent memorial to lewis and clarac was stricken out the bill was passed the senate at p m adjourned |
