Show Dont Don't Swim Near Island Pollution By BETTY DETTY C C. C FISHER Tuesday morning an interesting interesting interesting interest interest- ing series of tests in a preliminary preliminary preliminary nary study of the water between Antelope Island and the mainland east of the island was begun in Davis County A TEAM composed of T T. T Ward Warnock Davis County sanitarian ian for the county health department department department depart depart- ment and Russell Fraser and Calvin of the Utah State Health Department made a total of 30 tests at ten various points in these waters The tests were made upon re request request request re- re quest from the Great Salt Lake Authority This is the group who Is planning the long range development development development devel devel- of the northern tip of Antelope An- An Antelope Antelope An An- Island as a recreation destination des des- Before they can can plan any permanent bathing fa facilities they wish to determine if the waters surrounding the island are fit for people to swim in SINCE THE county built a road out from Syracuse to within about a mile of the tip of the island an adjoining sandbar has become quite a popular beach And although it has not been authorIzed authorized authorized author author- by county officials many of those making the trip to the end of the road have been either wading wading wading wad wad- ing or swimming in the water at that point We want to encourage swimming swimming swimming swim swim- ming there but only If there are areno areno areno no health hazards Commission Chairman Glen W W. W Flint said SO THE TIlE FIRST of the tests was made this week to determine if any health hazards exist be because because because be- be cause of the sewage being dumped Into the lake from various various various var var- ious points This was just the first of a series of tests that are planned periodically all this summer sum sum- mer The reason a series of tests must be made is that the results would vary according to wind flow turbulence of the water and the sewage and fresh water in inflow infloW inflow in- in flow among other variables The health departments have made a plan to check out six things in their preliminary study They are 1 1 to determine if a channel thannel exists along the east side of Antelope Island 2 2 To determine determine determine deter deter- mine how far the polluted water from Salt Lake finds its way along the east side of the island 3 3 TO DETERMINE if a layering layering layering layer layer- ing effect of clear water over the brine is occurring along the east eastside eastside eastside side of the island 4 To determine determine determine deter deter- mine if the surface and deep Waters waters waters wa wa- are contaminated with colt coll- form bacteria In the area be between between between be- be tween the end of f the road and the Island where bathers have re recently recently recently re- re been observed 5 To determine if bacterial contamination exists at varying depths of the lake at the area under survey 6 To further peruse peruse peruse per per- use related sanitation literature previously recorded concerning Great Salt Lake sanitation re research re- re search IT HAS LONG been an established established established fact that Great Salt Lake has been the dumping grounds for many gallons of sewage each day There are 11 treatment plants whose effluent makes its way to the lake after dumping directly Into the Jordan River However these plants are all treating their effluent by chlorination chlorination chlorination nation which kills kiUs the bacteria after the solid wastes have been removed so this is not THREE OF the four treatment plants in Davis County the Central Central Central Cen Cen- Weber plant the Brigham City Tremont and r plants r r See POLLUTION on page 2 I Pollution Continued from front page also use the chlorination treatment treatment treatment treat treat- ment on their sewage before it flows Into the lake The fourth fourt h Davis County plant will also be using the chlorination treatment beginning July 1 I. But there is still one channel which is dumping raw sewage at ata ata ata a r reported ported rate of 30 million gallons gallons gal gal- lons ions per day directly into the lake This is the waste coming from Salt Lake City IT DOES NOT flow Into the J Jordan River It is channeled into an inverted siphon under the riv riv- er and flows on out through the Salt Lake sewage canal into the lake right at the Salt Lake-Davis Lake County line Thus the effluent flows north into Davis County where it spreads out over quite a vast area This is the situation concerning I Ithe the study team the most They want to determine just how ex extensive extensive extensive ex- ex the flow of this raw waste material is DOES IT FLOW as far north as the Syracuse Roads Road's ending Does it flow as far as the northern northern north north- I f ern tip of Antelope Island Does it even flow around the tip and onto the west side of the island If U so how hazardous are ae those I waters to the health of people swimming in them Next year the problem may not be so great After all aU these many years of dumping the raw sewage into the lake Salt Lake City is building a sewage treatment plant just south of the Davis County line Une It is scheduled for completion completion completion comple comple- tion this fall So next year the situation situation situation sit sit- may be entirely different STITCHING WITCHES The Stitching Witches H 4 sewing sewing sewing sew sew- ing club directed by Mrs Phyllis Chipman met on June 7 to discuss disCuss discuss dis dis- Cuss cuss their summer activities and to elect officers THE SEWERS chosen for officers officers officers cers were M Marlane arlane Flack as president Ruth Chipman vice president Sandra Roundy secretary secretary secretary secre secre- tary and treasurer Cheryl Smith reporter and Tamra Barton as song le leader leder der SNAPPY JUNE 11 was the first meeting of the Snappy We elected elected elected elect elect- ed our officers who are Pres Launa Jenkins vice president Cay Clark secretary Sandra King Our first project was making sandwiches with cheese and egg- egg salad filling mUng and banana milk shakes Our party ended by cleanIng cleaning cleaning clean clean- ing the kitchen WE ARE looking forward to our next meeting |
